Let there be light on a dreary day!

Bright light therapy lamp

I hate winter and the lack of light, it make getting up in the mornings harder and working from home in the day can be difficult too especially being a blogger where I need daylight for taking photographs etc.

The lack of natural light effects my mood and my energy levels and I am not alone. Many people suffer from SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern.

SAD is sometimes known as “winter depression” because the symptoms are more apparent and tend to be more severe during the winter.

The symptoms often begin in the autumn as the days start getting shorter. They’re typically most severe during December, January and February.

SAD often improves and disappears in the spring and summer, although it may return each autumn and winter in a repetitive pattern. – nhs.uk

I am certainly grumpier and moodier in the winter months, I struggle to motivate myself to leave the house when it’s cold, wet and dark and would much rather be tucked up inside in the warm.  I do of course leave the house, I couldn’t get away with hiding away – school certainly would have something to say about it if I did.

For the past few weeks I have been trying out a light therapy lamp and while I was sceptical I am now a complete convert and have it on daily.

It is currently set up next to the sofa where I work but will be on my desk when I finally get myself a nice office set up, hopefully over the summer. I also move it upstairs when I sit in Emmy’s room to work sometimes – I like a change of scenery every now and again.

Normal indoor lighting in a well enlighten home is as little as 100 lux – this is a thousand times less than the volume of natural light outside on an average summer day. Not surprisingly, in the latest research by Innolux Bright Light Therapy found Britons are battling through the day because of a lack of natural light. Of the 1,000 Brits surveyed, the majority said lack of good quality light can have an impact on their energy levels and mood (69% and 64% respectively). And 65% claim the main reason that they are dissatisfied with the lighting levels in their homes is that is it too dark.

Since this light arrived and I have been using it daily I have noticed that after around a week my mood has already changed, I had more energy and my concentration has improved. After 3 weeks I am finally more productive and have found my to-do-list is actually going down a lot faster.  I don’t find myself falling asleep on the sofa after lunch time and I’m not reaching for the stodge at lunch time either.

The lamp I have is the Valovoima from Innolux, a stylish LED bright light device with a dimmer. It is designed in a way that the light is easy to direct and the compact device is easy to place anywhere. It features a dimmer switch on the side so you can choose the brightness of the lamp depending on where you have it placed and how bright it is in your room already. The lamp is designed by one of the top Finnish designers Harri Koskinen.

The lamp part at the top is on a bracket so you can change the light positioning having the light bar horizontal, vertical or even tilted.

Bright light devices work by delivering daylight or light of specific wavelengths to the back of the eye (retina) to help keep the circadian and other rhythms relating to the body clock stable. They are most effective between 6am and 10am – when we are naturally supposed to be exposed to daylight.

With certain light devices, such as Innolux, there’s no need to look at the light directly. This means you can carry on with your everyday activities such as reading, eating, working or watching TV while taking advantage of bright light therapy – this is what I do, the lam is set up next to me while I work and other than actually being able to see the screen better I forget it is there.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect when this lamp arrived but I freely admit that I love it, and because I am finally once again concentrating on my work instead of half falling asleep it means I can get it done in the daytime leaving evenings free for family time and means I’m not getting into bed at nearly 1am as I’ve a deadline to meet.

Innolux, a Finnish brand that has just launched in the UK have a large range of bright light lamps. Its devices don’t look like the traditional clunky light boxes or sad lamps but stylishly designed to be naturally incorporated into your home to give you year round benefits. Available in the UK from www.purelifestylewonders.com from £89
