Flutterby Butterfly #Review

Emmy loves Butterflies. From a young age she would chase them around fields trying to catch them – not in a horrid way, more of a curious kinda way.
Recently Magic Belles sent Emmy her very own Butterfly kit so she could watch and very own Caterpillars grow into Butterflies before her eyes.
Magic Belles for those of you who haven’t come across them yet are tiny fairies who look after life’s special wonders.  We came across them a while back and Emmy loves these little fairies.  There are 6 fairies: Love Belle, Flower Belle, Star Belle, Rainbow Belle, Cupcake and of course Butterfly Belle.  It was Butterfly Belle who sent the wonderful Butterfly gift.

I’ve seen these advertised on TV and had been thinking of trying over the summer holiday so the timing was perfect for us.
When the kit arrived we dived straight in. You get a Butterfly enclosure, instructions and a pippet in the box and in a separate box are the baby Caterpillars.
The Caterpillars are really small and inside a plastic pot which has all the food they need for them to grow. The lid has air holes in so they can breathe and a circle netting attached to the top.
Each day it was really exciting watching the Caterpillars grow.  Every few days it was clearly visible how much they were growing,  you could see the food disappearing,  the Caterpillars playing (and fighting).
Emmy found this really interesting and exciting.
Magic Belles also sent us a book about Caterpillar’s and Butterflies to read which Emmy enjoyed as she could see the stages of change and see what was going to happen next.

After around 15 days our Caterpillars worked there way to the top  od the pot and spun silk around themselves making chrysalis around themselves and went to sleep.

Emmy found this part rather boring and lost interest as she couldn’t see what they were doing.
We popped them on a shelf and left them alone.  About 13 days later they turned rather dark in colour and the next day our first Butterfly crawled out.

Emmy was so excited and I have to admit I was just as excited as her! Over the next few days one by one the other 4 Butterflies appeared.

After the first appeared we added leaves and flowers for them to eat. We also added pools of freshly squeezed Orange juice to the bottom for them to drink.

We kept them for a few days and watched them flutter around the enclosure. Them came the time to release them and say goodbye. We had been preparing Emmy for this moment however she found it really hard. She cried so hard when they all finally fluttered by and away and was inconsolable for a few hours sadly.

She understood why they needed to go but didn’t enjoy doing it.
We will definitely get some more and start the cycle again however I may wait until she is a little older next time.

If you would like to try this at home the kits are available to by from Insect Lore for £20.
Emmy loves heading over to the Magic Belles website and playing games with her fairy friends – she can play music, hear stories, colour in and play various other games – do have a look at their very cute website: www.magicbelles.com

  1. I've seen this advertised on TV too, really wanted to get one for my youngest daughter, but anything that flies freaks her out. Slowly getting better, so maybe next year x

  2. awww bless her 🙁 hopefully she will be better with it when she is a bit bigger, beautiful butterflies you had there, understand why it wasnt easy for her

  3. Oh, it breaks our hearts that Emmy was so upset – but she did a wonderful, wonderful job of helping more butterflies into the world. They do a very important job – and the more, the better. Thank you so much for helping out Butterfly Belle, Emmy. With love and magic dust from the Magic Belles in Bellevue xxx
