Paul and I honeymooned in Egypt. It was truly amazing and we embraced the food too. Now Paul at the time was a fussy eater however the food was amazing in our hotel – well we did stay in the Savoy!
In one part of our hotel where we dined the most it was a serve yourself buffet. We loved this as we could choose a little of everything and sample it all.
One of our favourite meat dishes was a meatball dish. The meatballs were cooked in a gravy type sauce with peppers, herbs and onions aplenty.
I’ve tried a few times and a few different ways to recreate this recipe and this is our favourite:
Meatballs:
500g Beef mince
salt and pepper to taste
2 tsp mixed herbs
2 tablespoons white breadcrumbs
Gravy:
2 tsp beef gravy granules
1/4 pint boiling water
1/2 small glass of red wine
1 tsp tomato puree
1 Green Pepper Diced
1 large Onion Diced
Mushrooms Quartered
small amount of Olive Oil
To make the meatballs – add all the ingredients to a bowl and knead together, making sure all of the ingredients mix together well. Knead well until all ingredients have been combined – I do this for around 5/10 minutes.
Take a tablespoon of the meat and mould into a ball. I make around 25/30 of these (the larger the ball the longer the cooking time).
- Heat the oil in a frying pan
- lightly cook the onions
- Add the meatballs and brown all over
- Add the Peppers and cook for a few minutes
- Add the mushrooms
- Mix the gravy granules, red wine and tomato puree together and then add the boiling water all in a bowl/jug and then add to the frying pan
- bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes
Serve with white rice.
I’m entering this recipe as my favourite winter warmer into a competition held by www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk – if you would like to enter you can find details here.
Sounds great – nice combination of textures. Thanks so much for joining in with #recipeoftheweek. I’ve pinned and tweeted this post and there’s a fresh linky live now. I hope you’ll pop over and join in again this week, if you haven’t already!
Not sure I have ever tried any Egyptian food… this might be the perfect to start with, thank you
They look delicious – my kids adore meatballs
My son is obsessed with tinned meatballs,I would love to turn him onto these instead!
We're off to Egypt for our holiday at Easter. So I'll be trying this dish to get us used to the food we might encounter out there x
We honeymooned in Egypt too! I do love a good buffet restaurant! This looks delish, apart from the mushrooms, weird things that they are!
I've never seen anything like this before, especially with the green peppers. It sounds lovely. I love experimenting to try and re-create much loved recipes, especially if it's not easy to go back and try them again.
I love meatballs, and that sounds like a fab recipe x
That sounds delicious – I may have to try this x
Mmmmmmm…yum yum!
They work just as well without breadcrumbs too, then they are also wheat and gluten free if you need them to be!
I have got to make this recipe for my Hubs. I just learned that mushrooms can help clean up our digestive systems. So I have been using a lot of mushrooms lately.
Meatballs are always a winner in our house. They look very tasty.
I have never heard of meetballs like this I have to admit but they do sound yummy! x
In fact I have never heard of meetballs – because of course I meant meatballs – back to bed for me!
Looks fab. My boys love meatballs
Honeymoon in Egypt in the Savoy – wow! No wonder you want to try and recreate that.
I am always on the look out for new recipes, this looks lovely. Will definitely be trying it. 🙂
Have never tried meatballs like this but it's my children's favourite dinner! Thanks for sharing 🙂
