Being safe in the car has always been a huge concern of mine, even before Emmy arrived as I’ve been a Nanny for 13+ years now. One of my concerns has always been making sure the car seats are age appropriate and fitted correctly – not always an easy task as I currently have 2 jobs with different aged children so that means a lot of changing around of the seats in the car.
On Mondays I have in my care two 2.5 year olds and a 13 month old – which means 3 large stage 2 car seats, while on Wednesdays I have Emmy (2.5 years as well as a 4 & 8 year old) which means 1 large stage 2 car seat and 2 booster style seats. As you can imagine this means a lot of moving about of the seating in my car – a Vauxhall Astra Sport, which is getting harder for me to manage being 28 weeks pregnant.
I recently took delivery of something I hoped would make my life easier as well as suiting all of the children I care for and I was not disappointed. The Kiddy Guardian Pro 2 is a car seat which really does grow with the child! Suitable for ages 9 months – 12 years (9 – 36 kgs) there is no need to buy another car seat as your child grows, the seat if fully adjustable to accommodate a small child or an older child.
I have used this seat now with the 1, 2, 4 & 8 year olds in my care and it has been a winner with all!! Infact the 4 & 8 year olds are now fighting over who goes in the “Comfy seat” and there were arguments over who’s turn it was to sit in it.
Emmy was a little unsure of the impact shield to start with as she just wasn’t used to it but after a few trips out she soon got used to it and now uses it for a shelf for her toys – however 8 out of 10 times she has fallen asleep within 10 minutes of being in it – it must be comfy!! This is also helped by the fact she can’t reach her shoes and socks (a favourite trick of hers for keeping herself awake)
Having 3 large car seats in the car does mean I need to put one in the front, so I always make sure Emmy goes in the front whenever possible (as she is my child I take full responsibility for this), with this new seat I feel so much safer doing so as it has the Kiddy impact shield, is heavily padded and there is no way Emmy can escape the straps in this as she used to in her 5 point harness. The Guardian Pro 2 come in three parts – the seat unit and the impact cushion and a booster which fits onto the seat unit.
When I use the seat with the 1 year old all three sections are used – the booster cushion is doubled over to make A higher in the seat and the impact bar then goes across her waist, this fits snuggly under the arm cushions and presses securely against her tummy, she is then belted in with the normal seat belt which goes across the impact shield.
When Emmy or the other 2 year old uses it – the booster cushion is still used but unfolded and the seat secured in the same way, and when being used by the 4 & 8 year olds the booster is removed as is the impact shield – the headrest is moved up as they are taller (this is really easy to do just lifting the handle at the back and pulling the top of the seat up, this also makes the sides widen allowing for extra space and comfort – they are then belted in with the normal seat belt. This bottom of the seat also adjusts allowing for extra leg comfort however I haven’t had to do this yet. Apart from the versatility of this seat and the enhanced safety features I love how quick and easy it is to move from one seat to another and to fasten the children in – so much quicker than the 5 point harnesses I have been used to.
(nice and comfy for A aged 13 months – secure and also reclined)
Toys can be attached to the impact bar.
(Left W aged 4, Right B aged 8 years – B refused to be pictured wearing her seatbelt as it is uncool – we were parked and about to get out of the car though.)
This seat is wider than my old seat meaning I now can’t have 3 car seats in the back (I could have Maxi Cosi Priori XP’s and a booster in the back – at a squeeze) but that just means Paul can’t come out on day trips with us – not the end of the world!!
I would like to see a cup holder at some stage as Emmy always likes to have a drink to hand and used to hold it on her lap but I’m sure we can live without.
This seat retails at £225 and I would say is great value for money as it eliminates the need for a separate booster at a later stage, is really comfy and very safe. We love it.
You can also use this seat on airplanes, the seats are fully removable and machine washable at 30 degrees. It also won Best Buy for Which? Child Car Seat November 2011.
