National Geographic STEM Dig Kits #Review

National Geographic stem dig kits

My children love keeping busy and arts and crafts but they do also get bored rather quickly, if they want to paint it actually takes me longer to get out the equipment than they spend actually making any marks on the paper.

Recently they were both send a National Geographic STEM dig kit to try and they were a huge hit.

Emmy was sent a GemstoneDig Kit and Harry a Shark Tooth dig kit.

Both of these kits are very similar in that you have to use the tools provided within the kit to excavate the hidden treasures within the rocks. You are provided with a magnifying glass and a digging tool.

The Gemstone kit has a digging brick which has painted gems on the front of it and inside are 3 different gems which you have to dig out, you can then find out more about these gemstones within the learning booklet which is included.

The Shark Tooth dig kit has a digging brick which has a shark painted on the top of it, inside are 3 different types of shark teeth which are waiting to be discovered. Once you have dug them out you can learn more about them in the learning booklet which is also included.

Before we began digging into these digging bricks I gave the children a tray each to help contain the mess, which turned out to be a great idea as once they started chipping into the bricks there was a lot of mess indeed.

They did find it a little tricky to slowly chip away at the bricks as it was solid. We combatted this by pouring on a little water onto them to soften them which worked really well. They could then use the chipping tool to dig in and find their treasures.

These National Geographic dig kits are great for teaching children a little patience and perseverance as well as teaching them all about the specimens they are looking for.

The guide is also packed full of information and amazing facts about the crystals and shark which the teeth belong too.

Both children loved these kits, they kept them amused for about 20 minutes.

The only downside we found was that all 3 of the shark teeth we located right at the top of the digging brick in very close proximity to each other, meaning Harry found all of them far too quickly and the fun was over quicker than it should have been. Emmy’s were also quite close together too and it would have been nice if they were evenly spread throughout the digging bricks.

Disclaimer: We were sent these items in exchange for this post, as always all thoughts are my own.
