As you know both of my children are now in school, Emmy is in year 1 and Harry attends the school Nursery 2 days a week and although he hasn’t attended many sessions as yet due to bank holidays, inset days and illness he is enjoying it.
Now both my children are the complete opposite to each other, chalk and cheese really. Emmy loves to draw, write, read and learn. She is forever asking questions and wanting to find out the answers to different topics. Harry on the other hand hates to sit still, refuses to draw and isn’t interested in learning to even write his name – well with me anyway, I am hoping this is different when he is at school.
Recently he was sent 2 of the brand new Letts Wild About books, the Wild About series is matched to the National Curriculum and takes children on an adventure, where they will practice English and Maths skills and also learn about animal facts along the way. These are age appropriate books which support pre-school, KS1 and KS2.
The books are packed with fun puzzles, beautiful wildlife photography and fun facts to help keep parents and children entertained.
We were sent the pre-school books in this range, a Numbers and a Phonics workbook which are suited to Harry who as yet at 3 can’t write or read. Usually is I attempt to even coax him into trying to ‘learn’ he throws a strop and rushes off to play outside of with his trains, he has even been known to get into bed and pretend to be asleep rather than look at a workbook with me (he is my stubborn one). This wasn’t the case with these book, the colourful pages and all the animals grabbed his attention from the off and he hugged them desperate to open then and me to read them to him.
|Yes he is cuddling his book|
Now he hasn’t got tot the stage of wanting to write in them yet or to attempt tracing the letters etc. but we have read over half of each book together, traced over the writing with his fingers and pointed to the correct answers to the questions. This is a HUGE leap for Harry and he asks to look at them too which for any parent brings great pride.
His favourite is the phonics book as it focus’ more on the sounds than writing an answer or performing a task. Each page focus’ on a sound and has pictures beginning with that sound as well as a few trick ones. Harry really enjoyed looking at the pictures and saying what they were and then together we worked out which ones started with the correct letter.
These really are a lovely set of books and in just a few days have completely hooked Harry and changed his thoughts on learning – although heaven forbid he actually realises this is work and not just fun.
