One of the things I make sure of regularly is that the smoke alarms in my house work, and to make doubly sure they are wired into the mains. I know they work as whenever Paul cooks Sausages they go off, but on a serious note I do check them often.
You can never be too safe though so we have now added a Nest Protect Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm to our household.
Did you know that carbon monoxide poisoning accounts for approximately 50 fatalities and 4,000 medical visits per year? Knowing that is rather scary especially when you have small children in the house as Carbon Monoxide is something you can’t see, smell or taste – a silent killer which happens when a gas appliance has been incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained. It can also occur if flues, chimneys or vents are blocked.
So what is the Nest and why is it special?
Nest Protect is a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in one, it connect up to your smart phone to alert you to dangers even if your are not at home.
Not only is it alarm it is peace of mind too. This device checks the batteries for you and will alert you via your phone if they run low.
It also talks to you in a loud but calming voice to tell you exactly what the danger is before the piercing alarm shrieks through the house. This I found is good for alerting the children, as they are scared of loud noises and just cover their ears tightly if the smoke alarm goes off – this will tell them that there is smoke and they then know there is a danger too – and it may not just be Mummy or daddy cooking sausages! Obviously you need to teach them what it means if they are small but it is another way of warning of dangers – especially good if it goes off in the night.
If you are out and there is a danger you will get an alert on your phone – this means you could call the fire brigade immediately and alert to dangers in advance of your arrival home.
Nest also has a Pathlight that glows white at night to light your way in the dark as you pass below it, just walk under it in the dark and it will glow as a nightlight for you – this is good for having on the landing to help the kids find the loo in the dark.
Setting up is simple – follow the very detailed instructions in the booklet, create a login on the Nest site and download the app – connect to your phone and your pretty much set to go.
I’ve tested our Nest by burning some onions in the kitchen while cooking – this is the alert from my phone just as the alarm started to sound – My alarm is positioned in my Hallway.
This alarm not only helps to protect but it helps to give peace of mind too!
