Slow cooker chicken curry

I was recently asked if I would like to try the new home delivery service from Morrisons as they had not only just introduced the new delivery service, they were had introduced to my area too.
Of course I was very happy to do so.
One of the challenges asked of me was to create a nutritious family meal for under £10.
That is easy for me as I’m used to cooking on a budget so I thought I would see just how cheaply I could make one of our favourite meals.
Slow cooker chicken curry with rice.
  • 400g morrisons diced chicken breast (I purchased 3 packs for various meals which lowered the cost to £3.33)
  • Schwartz slow cooker chicken curry mix – 90p
  • 1 red pepper – 79p
  • Tin of Chopped Tomatoes – 25p
  • 1 onion – 8p
  • half bag of spinach  80g – 49p
  • 200g easy cook long grain rice – 26p
Total cost = £6.07 making 4 portions (£1.52 per person)
I love my slow cooker as it means I am able to put all ingredients into it without any effort, turn on either in the morning on low, after lunch on medium or even around 3pm on high for 3 hours.  It makes my life so much easier and means I can go out and not worry about having dinner ready on time.
  • Trim any fat off of the chicken breast and add to the bottom of the slow cooker
  • Peel the onion and roughly chop adding it in with the chicken
  • Wash and deseed the pepper and roughly chop adding too
  • Add the chopped tomatoes into the pan too
  • Open the sauce mix and stir well into the chicken mix
  • Turn on and leave – Low for a minimum of 6 hours, medium for 4 and high for around 2,5/3 hours
  • Wash and dry the spinach and add 15/20 minutes before the end
  • cook the rice as per the packet instructions
You can add a dash of double cream to the chicken curry just before serving if you wish a creamier consistency.
Drain the rice, stir the curry and serve.
This is one of our favourite meals.
Of course you can make your own spice mix however that does often bump up the cost if these aren’t spices you have in your cupboard already.
Disclaimer:  I received a Morrisons home delivery and a weeks worth of shopping for the purpose of these posts.

  1. I didn't even know Morrisons did home delivery. Will have to check it out as I like the shop but there are none near me.

  2. I've not used my slow cooker for ages, I tend to bring it out in the Winter months only – but this might just make me fetch it out again!
