Mold grows anywhere where there is moisture. It can grow behind leaking walls, under your carpet and even in your ceilings. Based on one of the articles from BestOfMachinery, mold is something that can also collect outside, either on our home exterior or on garden furniture. However, molds are commonly found in our bathrooms than any parts of the home. Molds can be very difficult to eradicate and can bring about irritants and allergens that can be harmful to your family’s health. Mold in your house can be very difficult to remove especially if it grows in sensitive areas. It is better to prevent the mold from growing all together than having to struggle with the process of trying to get rid of it. Here are three proven ways you can use to prevent mold from growing in your house.
Keep Moisture Levels Low
Kitchen and bathroom sinks, as well as floors, are ripe places for mold to grow. These areas are prone to molds as they are often wet. Considering that these areas are mostly non-porous, you can easily use disinfectants to make sure they remain clean and free from bacteria. You can also wipe them dry with towels and hang out the towels outside to dry. When cleaning, you should ensure that you leave the surfaces completely dry since molds need just a little moisture and very little time to grow. Apart from your day to day cleaning that can leave moisture on these surfaces, leaking pipes, especially in kitchens, can also provide enough moisture to enable the growth of molds. Check your pipes on a regular basis to ensure that there is no leakage.
Ensure Proper Ventilation
Have proper ventilation in your entire house, especially your basement, bathroom and other areas where water is likely to accumulate and remain for some time. When it rains, water can seep into your basement. Keep checking to ensure that you dry any of it that manages to get through and have some form of ventilation to allow air to circulate freely and evaporate that which you might overlook. Your bathroom should also have a window and keep it open when taking a shower. You should also do the same when doing your laundry or when washing your dishes. Preferably, do your laundry outside on your balcony or out in the open air and hang your clothes outside to dry. You can also use an exhaust fan to keep the air in constant circulation to keep your house dry. Dehumidifiers and AC units can also come in handy but make sure that they do not produce any moisture.
Use Mold Resistant Products
In addition to keeping your house dry, you can incorporate mold resistant products like mold-resistant Sheetrock. You can also use mold inhibitors when painting your walls. A mold-resistant drywall can come in handy where there is a high prevalence of humidity. You can incorporate such walls in laundry rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. These walls are made of gypsum boards covered with fibreglass that is resistant to moisture. Preventing moisture from seeping into this wall prevents molds from growing. You will still need to wipe any of it that forms on the walls though.
