Mind-Stimulating Activities To Do With Your Kids

8 Mind-Stimulating Activities To Do With Your Kids This Summer

Posted on August 9, 2022November 27, 2023

**Collaborative post**

When you’re a kid, summer vacation is the best time of year: no school, no homework, just endless possibilities. But if you’ve been a kid once too, you know those carefree days are pretty dull when you have nothing to do. We understand that keeping kids busy and out of trouble is a tall order for any parent, but luckily there are lots of things you can do with your kids this summer that will not only keep them entertained but also stimulate their minds. Keeping kids stimulated during the summer is an excellent way to keep them from getting bored and succumbing to temptation. When we’re talking about keeping kids stimulated, it means giving them activities that can challenge their brains in new ways and help build problem-solving skills as well as creative thinking abilities.

Play board games

Board games are great for all ages and are a fun way to interact and socialise. You can play a classic like Monopoly or go for something new like Exploding Kittens, a card game for two to four players where you try to avoid getting Exploding Kittens by using protective shields like the laser eyes or cat-a-tat. There are lots of board games that are educational too, and many are perfect for kids. For example, Scrabble is great for word building and vocabulary; Spot It! focuses on visual scanning, pattern recognition, and quick thinking; and Jenga creates an exciting build-up of tension as you carefully take out and place wooden blocks. Whether you choose a classic board game or decide to learn chess, it’s all a matter of personal preference and finding the right challenge for you

Go on a walking adventure

Walking is one of the best ways to get kids interested in the outdoors and is a great way to get them moving and active. You can walk in a park, along a river, or even in your neighbourhood. When you go on walks with your kids, you can turn them into adventures by making up stories, looking for bugs and flowers, and asking questions to spark conversation like What do you think will happen next? or What do you think the person who lives in this house does for a living? What’s more, if you plan your walks for the afternoon, you can turn them into an excellent way to end the day and get kids ready for bed. You can make a game out of it by turning it into a treasure hunt or creating a challenge like walking in silence, so your kids have to think of things to say to each other.

Visit a local museum

If you have a local museum, it’s a great place to take your kids this summer. Many museums are free, have activities and events for kids, and can be educational too. For example, many museums have hands-on activities for kids, like dressing up and learning about different professions, and lots of museums have special days and events just for families. Museums are a great way to expose your kids to new things and let them experience history hands-on. Museums cover various topics, from art and science to culture and history. You can even plan a day trip to a bigger city and visit a big museum, like the Natural History Museum in London or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Go hiking

Hiking is an activity that you can enjoy all year round, but it’s especially great in the summer. It’s a fun way to get active, explore nature, and it can be as easy or difficult as you like. You can hike near your home or explore new places, discover hidden gems, and meet new people. Many sites offer hiking trails for families, like state forests and parks, and can recommend ones near you. You can hike on your own or join a family-friendly hiking club. If you want a more challenging hike, you can make the walk harder by finding more difficult trails or using different techniques like side-stepping to make it more of a cardio workout. There are many benefits to hiking with kids, such as improving fitness and mental health, connecting with nature, and spending quality time together as a family.

Swim and have a picnic in the park

Swimming is an excellent way for kids to get active, be challenged, and have fun. You can take your kids swimming at a local pool or a lake. There are lots of ways to make swimming more entertaining for kids. You can play games like Marco Polo or make it a competition by timing each other or trying to do as many laps as you can. You can also make it a family bonding experience by going with friends or inviting other families to join you. After you’re done swimming, you can have a picnic in the park. This is a great way to end the day and keep kids entertained. You can make your picnic extra special by putting on some music, taking the opportunity to do some impromptu dancing, or going all out with a fancy picnic spread.

Try out metal detecting

Metal detecting is a hobby that people of all ages enjoy and is a great way to get kids interested in history. It’s best done on beaches where there are likely many coins, but some people even do it in their neighbourhoods. You can buy a detector specifically for children online at Detectorlist if you’re looking to buy one to use time and time again. Finding old coins or other artefacts is a great way to spark an interest in history and teaches kids about different cultures and people. You can even do it with your kids and make it a family activity. Metal detecting is a fun outdoor activity, and you can find ways to make it more challenging, like digging only for old coins or trying to find unique artefacts like a pirate’s chest.

Try programming for kids

If you have a child interested in computers, programming is a great way to get them interested in technology and thinking like a computer scientist while also keeping them entertained.  It is also a great, unique extra-curricular activity that your kids can continue to do during the school year. Many online websites, like Scratch or Kodable, let kids create and animate their own computer games and programs. You can also use computer programs like Roblox, a game where kids can create their worlds and games by coding. Working with computers is an excellent way to get your kids interested in technology and thinking like a computer scientist while having fun. It’s also great for kids to learn problem-solving skills and creativity.

Plan a weekend trip to the countryside

Going on a weekend trip to the countryside is a great way to get your kids outside, get active, and learn new things. It’s a fun way for you and your kids to get out of the city, get away from technology, and get a change of scenery. You can go hiking, rock climbing, visit a theme park, or try out other outdoor activities in the countryside. A weekend trip to the countryside is a great way to get your kids away from the hustle and bustle of the city and let them enjoy the great outdoors. It’s a fun and exciting way to spend time with your kids and let them learn new things and try new activities.
