Today’s wedding season sees more than just brides and grooms heading to the altar. With modern family dynamics changing, the pressure on friends, relatives and colleagues to look their best has increased exponentially.
Whether you are a parent of the bride or groom, an aunt or uncle of one of the betrothed, or simply a friend of either party, chances are you will be attending at least one wedding this year. And if you’re like most people in your social circle, you probably want to look your very best when that big day comes around.
Fortunately for you (and them), there are a few things you can do to make sure that happens. Whether it’s by investing in new outfits, making some subtle style changes, or following some expert advice on what not to wear again – take note of our tips on how to dress the family to impress this wedding season.
1. Plan ahead
Planning ahead will give you ample time to find outfits that fit your style, don’t break the bank, and are appropriate for the season and occasion. If you’re attending a summer wedding, for example, you may want to steer away from heavier fabrics like wool and cashmere or opt for lighter and cooler fabrics like linen and silk instead.
You may also want to consider swapping your heavier winter accessories for lighter ones, like a lighter handbag or a lighter wallet instead of a bulky leather one.
2. Dressing for the season
It’s important to choose fabrics that fit with the season, but you should also keep in mind other elements like colour and pattern when outfit planning for a wedding. Summer weddings are usually more casual, so you should be dressed accordingly if you’re attending one.
While you don’t necessarily need to wear shorts to a wedding – even if it’s outdoors and in the summer – you should wear fabrics more suited for warmer temperatures like linen, silk, or cotton.
On the other hand, if you’re attending a winter wedding – or even if you’re just visiting someone indoors during the winter – you should try to wear fabrics that are warmer or that at least contain a bit of synthetic fiber so they don’t make you too hot.
3. Update your wardrobe
If you haven’t worn your most-loved pieces in a while, it might be time to retire them in exchange for something new. While you don’t have to go out and buy an entirely new wardrobe for the wedding season, you should definitely replace anything that’s too worn, frayed, ragged, or out-of-style. Shoes, bags, belts, and other accessories should also be checked for wear and tear and replaced when necessary.
4. Think tailored and darker
If you have a few nice dress shirts, a nice pair of slacks, and a trusty blazer, you can create multiple appropriate outfits with just those few pieces of clothing. You should also consider investing in a nice pair of dress shoes and a belt if you don’t already own them. It’s also a good idea to have a nice pair of dress shoes that you can wear with any outfit, even if it’s not a formal occasion. These items will make your wardrobe much more versatile, and you can wear them for many different occasions besides weddings.
It’s also a good idea to add a few darker colours to your wardrobe for the fall and winter months. While you can wear lighter colours like pink and yellow all year round, darker colours like navy blue and black are primarily worn during the colder months.
5. Get a good haircut and colour
If you’re planning on getting a new look for the wedding season, now is the time to do it. Whether you decide to get a brand-new haircut, a fresh dye job, or something in between, you should book an appointment with your stylist as soon as possible. Getting a haircut and/or colour a little before a wedding is generally a good idea because it will give the new look time to grow in and look more natural before the big day.
6. Don’t forget the footwear
It’s easy to forget about your footwear when you’re outfit planning. It’s easy to think, “I have the perfect shoes for my outfit.” and then forget about your footwear altogether. When choosing your outfit for a wedding, make sure you don’t forget to include your footwear. It’s important to wear appropriate footwear for any formal event you attend, and weddings are no exception.
If you’re attending a summer wedding, you can get away with wearing any type of sandal or business casual men shoes. If it’s a winter wedding, you’ll want to wear something a little bit warmer, like a pair of winter boots or a pair of dressy shoes.
