Practical Parenting for New Moms: How To Take Care of Baby and Chill Out!

Posted on May 11, 2020

**Collaborative post**

So you’re a new mom. It can be a scary experience! You suddenly have a new life to take care of and your own needs have become secondary. This can be a tough adjustment for just about anybody, so give yourself a break. You’re probably switching up your sleep schedule, trying to improve your daily diet, and frantically reading reviews for new moms about products you’ve seen around the Internet. We’re here to tell you that it’s okay to feel this way but you can totally chill out. Yes, that’s possible too!

Get rid of your to-do list

Once you become a new mom, you officially acquire the freedom to stop thinking about your checklist. Ignore whatever is on it: washing, cooking, buying diapers, and learn to be with your kid. Enjoy the special times together because once your baby grows up, you’ll miss spending time with them!

Sleep early

This is just as important for you as it is for your toddler. Of course, you need your child to have a stable bedtime, but if you’re stressed out or running on empty, you won’t be able to provide functional care. So set timings for yourself and try to coordinate those with your baby’s timings so both of you can sleep at the same time.

Take advantage of your nearest and dearest

Target the people you should contact when you have to vent, for e.g., friends who will give their advice when you ask for it and keep their opinions to themselves when you don’t, and who will sacrifice anything to be there for you and your family (and vice versa). Make sure you show them you love them and thank them as much as you can. Your support system is invaluable at this time.

Ask your partner for help

Your husband or partner is crucial during this time. He’s all in, so allow him to be in charge of washing, reading, or tummy time (or all three of them). They’re perfect social activities and a chance for you to take a break. Plus, he will get to spend time and bond with your child, which is super important.

Trust your instincts

Sometimes, all the parenting books in the world won’t be able to help you make good decisions. You will just have to follow your gut and go along with what feels right. It can be pretty scary to not know what to do but your maternal instincts are real and they will help you power through.

Take a few time outs

Being a new parent is super stressful and there will be times when you will want to throw in the towel and sit in a corner crying. Or you will want to implode with anger when your child won’t listen and everything feels overwhelming. Fight this urge, however, and don’t put yourself through an emotional upheaval. The best thing to do is to give yourself a bit of a break, a time out, so to speak. Just sit by yourself for a little while and breathe deeply. You will feel better in no time!
