Parenting – it’s the most rewarding job in the world, but let’s not sugarcoat it: it’s hard work and often downright stressful. I’ve been there – running on fumes after yet another sleepless night, juggling the never-ending to-do list, and just hoping I don’t keel over before dinner. Over the years, I’ve learned that finding ways to handle stress is essential. Not just for your own sanity, but for the sake of your family, too – read on to discover natural ways to cope with stress as a parent.
I’ve found that natural methods are often the best for managing stress – they’re easier to stick with and don’t come with any nasty side effects. Here are some tried-and-tested ways I’ve learned to cope when life feels overwhelming:
Natural Ways to Cope with Stress as a Parent
1. Regular Exercise
I know, I know – when you’re knackered, the last thing you want to do is squeeze in a workout. But trust me, it helps. Even a brisk walk around the block can work wonders. Exercise gets those feel-good endorphins flowing, and before you know it, you’re feeling like you can tackle anything. Personally, I find walking the dog (or a friend’s dog, now that Barney’s gone) or a good dance session in the kitchen with the kids does the trick. If you’re thinking about welcoming a new furry companion, you can browse Cavapoo puppies at honestpet.com. For more ideas, have a read of my post on keeping active as a family.
2. Rest and Relaxation
If I could go back and give new-mum Clare some advice, it would be this: sleep is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. When you’re sleep-deprived, everything feels worse. These days, I make sure I’m in bed at a decent time, and I grab 10 minutes to myself with a cuppa during the day whenever I can. Don’t underestimate the power of a good nap or some quiet time with a book. Here’s how I try to squeeze in me-time when life is chaotic.
3. A Healthy Diet
It’s all too easy to reach for biscuits or crisps when you’re stressed, but I’ve learned (the hard way) that what you eat can make or break your mood. A balanced diet with plenty of fruit, veg, and whole grains keeps your energy up and stress down. Plus, it sets a good example for the kids – although convincing Harry to choose an apple over chocolate is still a work in progress! 4. Connect with Loved Ones
There’s nothing like a chat with a good friend to lift the weight off your shoulders. Whether it’s venting about the latest parenting drama or just laughing about the silly things, I always feel better after catching up with my most trusted and best friends.
5. Take Breaks from Technology
I’m as guilty as the next person of getting lost in the scroll, but sometimes you just need to unplug. I find taking the kids to the park or heading off out on a long walk helps us all reset. The fresh air and change of scenery work wonders. If your kids are glued to their devices like mine, I’ve shared tips on managing screen time that might help.
6. Try Mindfulness or Meditation
I’ll admit, I was sceptical at first – sitting still and focusing on my breath sounded impossible. But mindfulness has helped me stay calmer in those “pulling-my-hair-out” moments. Even five minutes can make a difference.
7. Aromatherapy
Who doesn’t love a bit of lavender to calm the nerves? I often pop a few drops in the bath or diffuse it in the house. It’s an easy way to create a calming atmosphere – and it makes the house smell lovely too.
8. Massage
Whether it’s a professional one (a rare treat for me) or just a quick shoulder rub from the kids, massages are magic for releasing tension. When I really need to unwind, I’ve got some tips on self-care ideas you can do at home.
9. Yoga or Tai Chi
I’ve dabbled in yoga, and while I’m far from an expert, the stretching and focus on breathing really help me feel grounded. Plus, it’s something you can do in your living room – no fancy gym required.

The Stress of Parenting
Let’s face it – parenting is stressful. The sleepless nights, the endless expenses and worrying about how to raise additional income and the constant worry if you’re doing enough. Then there’s the guilt – whether it’s overworking too much or not doing everything “perfectly” (whatever that even means). And don’t get me started on how hard it can be to find even five minutes of “me-time.”
It’s no wonder so many of us feel frazzled.
You’re Not Alone
If any of this resonates with you, just know you’re not alone. We’ve all felt overwhelmed, guilty, or just plain exhausted at some point. The key is to find what works for you and stick with it. Whether it’s a daily walk, a chat with a friend, or a few minutes of quiet mindfulness, small changes can make a big difference over time.
And remember – it’s OK to take care of yourself. In fact, it’s essential. A happy, healthy parent makes for a happier family, and you deserve that as much as they do.
