As car thieves learn how to bypass contemporary security systems, vehicle theft has dramatically increased over the previous few years and it’s harder to keep it secure. Additionally, it can be challenging to locate stolen vehicles, so if your automobile is taken, it’s possible that you won’t ever see it again. It’s something you need to consider alongside typical car issues.
Always ensure that your vehicle is securely locked.
It should go without saying, but because we are so accustomed to locking our automobiles with a key fob, we frequently fail to pay attention and wave our keys in its general vicinity as we enter a store. But you might forget to lock it if your key fob breaks or the battery runs out.
To be completely certain, stand by your car when you lock it and listen for the “clunk” when it locks. Car thieves occasionally only check door handles. On the majority of models, the wing mirrors may fold inward and the indicator lights should flash as well. It’s important to check, even if you’re only leaving your car for a short while.
Check, and Check Again
Security experts claim that as car thieves get more cunning, they are now employing a new device called a remote key jammer. Unfortunately, you can buy this handheld device online. It enables someone to block your key fob’s signal from up to 100 metres away, leaving your vehicle open and unprotected. Therefore, it’s always worthwhile to confirm that your car is securely fastened. Once you’ve locked your automobile, check to see if the internal locking mechanism has operated by attempting the door handle or, if your car has a keyless entry system, looking through the window.
Pay Attention to Where You Park
It can be tempting to take the first parking spot you come across if you’re in a rush or are continually driving around a busy city centre looking for a spot. But if you leave your car in a risky location, it might not be there when you get back, so it’s worth pausing for a moment or two to consider this. Here are some parking recommendations to stave off thieves:
- Keep your vehicle out of risky situations like dark parking lots or spaces that are hidden by structures or trees. Instead, look for active, well-lit locations. If there are a lot of people around and plenty of CCTV cameras on display, thieves are much less likely to target your vehicle.
- Always turn your vehicle toward the wall or garage while leaving it in a driveway or public parking lot, and lock all four wheels. Since easy targets are what car thieves are after, they won’t take the risk if they have to reverse or do difficult manoeuvres to escape. The same rule applies when parking on the street: point your wheels in the direction of the curb to prevent quick escapes.
In your garage is a safe bet and an extra level of security but not all homes have a good garage to put your car in these days. So you can always look at car storage options.
