Your child’s study environment will have a big impact on their ability to learn and remember information, so it’s of the utmost importance that you help them set up an appropriate space where they can do their homework and exam revision. There are lots of factors to consider; it has to be ergonomic so that they are comfortable and it can’t be in the vicinity of a TV or other types of distractions. Indoor lighting is something else that shouldn’t be overlooked. A primary school in Cambridge have put together the below advice to help parents who require a well-designed study environment in their home where their children can do their work.
Natural Lighting
Natural lighting is undeniably the best type of lighting when studying, but this isn’t always available, especially in the wintertime when the nights draw in earlier. If there is a window in the study room, it’s wise to place the desk as near to it as possible. A badly lit study space will put pressure on your child’s eyes, leading to pain, twitching and even headaches. This will drastically reduce your child’s motivation and productivity.
Task Lighting
Task lighting is handy when doing close up work, like reading or writing, because it directs the light to the task at hand. Table lamps are a great example and can help reduce the likelihood of eye strain and headaches. Some table lamps are very stylish, so if aesthetics is a priority for you then you won’t have a problem finding something that is both attractive and functional. If the desk space is large, you will need a taller lamp so that it covers the majority of the area.
LED Lighting
LED bulbs are becoming increasingly more popular in recent years because they are energy-efficient, leading to reduced utility bills. They also last longer than their standard alternatives, so the initial investment costs will be worth it in the long run. Another benefit of LED lights is that they provide immediate strong light as soon as they are switched on.
Planning the lighting in your home requires more thought than simply choosing fixtures and switching them on. An effective lighting scheme within your child’s study environment will create the ideal environment for effective learning. Try not to buy fixtures that are too big for the space as they will feel quite overbearing and distracting. With that in mind, it’s good to measure the space before you start spending your money.
