The joys of property are wonderful, however, it comes with endless to-do lists of things which always need updating, replacing or even repairing. As soon as one job is completed another is added to the list.
Having lived in my house for about 18 years, there are still parts of the house which have only been decorated once and are in desperate need of being spruced up – a fresh lick of paint, the floors need sanding and rewaxing and pictures on the wall could do with being rearranged and organising so they are no longer mismatched.
Some of the jobs which need doing within a house are very obvious – hoovering, cleaning the bathrooms, changing the bedding and general tidying up around the home. It’s easy to see when these jobs need doing, and it’s easy to get into a nice routine of doing a little every week so that things do not get on top of us. Other jobs which need doing less frequently tend to be forgotten.
I’ve been compiling a list of jobs that I need to do less frequently and have put them on my notice board, ticking each off as I complete them. I’m hoping this way I don’t find they all need doing at the same time and therefore become overbearing.
Some of these jobs include:
- Having the boiler serviced – not something which we tend to remember until the weather turns and we want to put on the radiators
- Bleeding the radiators and dusting behind them
- High and low dusting – if I can’t see it then its generally forgotten on the weekly clean – coving, lights and skirting boards to remove the cobwebs and dust
- Cleaning the oven, hood cleaning and extractor fans. Its amazing how dirty the oven gets and is a job that is always put off until the last minute – usually before cooking Christmas dinner
- Cutting back the bushes in the garden
- Reorganising the kitchen cupboards – no matter how hard I try to put things away tidily, I find that these always end up in such a mess and I can never find what I am looking for
Other jobs I’ve added to my to-do lists are ones that require more time and attention, ones which I will get around to at some point but definitely not this year:
- Repaint the front room and rearrange the furniture
- Buy new sofas. I’d like to add a sofabed to the front room to make out movie nights a little more fun
- Update the main bathroom, having done the downstairs shower room last year, it’s made the main one look very shabby and outdated. I’ve been eyeing up the range from Ove Decors and it made me long for a new bath, toilet and basin…in fact a complete overhaul of the room
- Replace the under-counter fridge in the kitchen
- Buy a new dishwasher, one that actually works would be a huge improvement
- Browse properties at ssbhg.ca – I’ve no plans on upping sticks and moving but it never hurts to look and dream does it?
Do you make long lists of jobs that need doing but never actually get done?
