Plumbing issues often tend to pop up when you’re least expecting them. Everything might have been running smoothly for years, and then suddenly you’ve got no heating and water is pouring everywhere.
While some plumbing-related issues obviously require further attention, with others, it can be a bit trickier to know if you really need help right away. Here, we take a look at a range of different issues, from leaks to sudden noises, which likely mean that something serious is going on.
Any kind of leak
If there are any kinds of leaks in your plumbing that aren’t dripping into a bathtub or sink, you’re going to want to call an emergency plumber as soon as possible. Even if it seems like it’s just a slow drip, it can quickly start to seep into the carpets and woodwork and cause far more serious structural issues.
Try to put a bucket or towel beneath the leaking joint or radiator to collect the water, and get an expert around from somewhere like Able Plumbers to sort it out as soon as reasonably possible.
Carbon monoxide issues
Carbon monoxide poisoning is relatively rare with modern boilers, but it likely remains the single most dangerous combustion-related hazard in most homes. Known as the invisible killer, carbon monoxide can build up without any warning signs such as odour.
If your carbon monoxide alarms start to go off, get an emergency plumber around as soon as possible – it could just be a false alarm, but it’s really not something that you want to play around with.
Sewage problems
Any kind of leak in your plumbing warrants your immediate attention, but sewage issues are often even more serious. If there’s a serious backup, you also need to think about the health risks associated with having raw sewage leaking into your home.
Getting an emergency plumber round in these situations should be your absolute priority. Make sure that you fully explain the issue before calling them out, so that you can be sure that they’re fully prepared to deal with the issue at hand.
Sudden noises
While lots of plumbing systems – especially those in older buildings – tend to make a range of different noises, in some cases, those sounds can be indicators that you’ve got a serious problem on your hands. If you hear a sudden hissing sound, for example, that could suggest you’ve got a high-pressure leak in some part of the system. Trust your gut instinct – if the noise is unfamiliar and is more than the general creaks and groans you’ve grown accustomed to, it’s probably best to get someone in to check on it.
Plumbing issues can be a pain to deal with, but the implications of letting them get out of hand are quite serious. Not only can something like a broken boiler cost an arm and a leg to replace, but you can also end up doing serious damage to your home. Make sure you take your plumbing problems seriously, and get an emergency plumber round to provide you with some peace of mind.
