The advent of the Smart TV has changed many things about how we understand and use electronic entertainment. Long gone are the days of a TV being a basic form of escapism, subject to what was being broadcast at the time of the day you wanted to watch.
The new era of Smart TVs has brought with it access to a nearly bottomless selection of on-demand viewing, at resolutions that result in a picture quality that has not been seen before, and which is constantly being improved upon as technology progresses.
A TV with internet access?
So commonplace by now that it is almost no longer considered a special feature, a standard Smart TV comes equipped with Wi-Fi capability, and the ability to access the internet with your TV. Although you can technically browse the internet using your TV, this connection brings so much more value to the table: from voice-operated commands to on-demand streaming, and inter-device connectivity, the fact that your TV can connect to the internet puts you in the driving seat of an unprecedented world of information and entertainment – the choices are limitless, and up to you.
The joys of preloaded software
The idea of getting a Smart TV is to be able to watch as many programmes and movies as you have access to, which, when you have internet connectivity, is a lot! The great thing is that most models have already been loaded with the apps and software you need to access most of the major streaming platforms, like YouTube, Hulu, Amazon and more.
Expanding the framework
Thanks to Bluetooth connectivity, any compatible device can be connected to another, resulting in the ability to build out your entertainment system with as many peripheral devices as you need or want to make it perfect for you.
Need to cast the content of your phone screen to the TV? Bluetooth. Extra speakers for better sound? Bluetooth. Gaming console? Bluetooth. You get the idea.
Resolution that keeps on giving
We’ve come a long way since 480 and 720p LCD displays. At the time, these were considered top of the range resolutions, but as technology improved, so did the displays.
You might remember a brief period where Blu-ray was a thing, characterised by high-resolution that did a great job of showing off the surge in CGI animation of the time. But the advent of plasma screens was the catalyst that truly took visual display into a new era. While 1080 High-definition screens are by all accounts excellent quality, 4k, which comes with an associated price tag, offers the viewer visual capabilities that have only been dreamt of up until now.
As with any appliance, the best advice is to buy the best you can afford. Luckily, the array of Smart TVs on the market is so diverse, that it isn’t difficult to look for one that meets your visual requirements and your budget. Remember the golden rule – the number of pixels should match the size of the unit, as too low an amount of pixels for the surface area of the screen will result in a compromised viewing experience.
