Why You Should Attend School Open Days

Posted on January 9, 2020

**Collaborative post**

Although choosing a school for your child might seem like years away, the decision will sneak up on you before you know it. When the time comes, be sure to attend lots of open days to give you a feel for what the schools are like. If your child is old enough, take them along and ask them for their own opinions, as they’re the ones who will be spending most of their time there. A pre-prep school in London explores more reasons why you should attend school open days below.

Listen to the Head’s Speech

At most school open days, the headteachers usually give a presentation of some description. Listen to them and determine whether or not you think they are welcoming and approachable, and generally a good representation of the school’s ethos. As well as the head’s talk, you will also have the chance to go on a tour of the school during which time you should determine whether you think it’s a safe, clean and comfortable environment for your son or daughter. Check out the dining facilities and bathrooms.

Talk to the Students

The tours are normally conducted by an existing student, so you should use it as an opportunity to ask lots of questions and find out what life as a pupil of the school is really like. Ask them if the teachers are nice, if there are any extra-curricular clubs and what their favourite aspect of the school is. The happiness and confidence of the children who attend the school is just as important as the building itself.

Consider Your Child’s Personality

Whilst you’re at the school, consider whether or not your child’s personality would fit in. Does the overall culture at the school suit your family values? Does it offer extra-curricular clubs that meet your child’s interests and hobbies? Also, think about whether or not you’d be comfortable letting your child make their own way to the school when they’re old enough, or if it’s on a good route for you to drop them off on time.

Do Your Homework

Make sure you do your homework before you go; read up on the school and explore their website and be sure to check out their Ofsted report and academic results. The more you know about the school before you pay it a visit, the better informed your decision will be at the end.
