Work from home - online learning course

Work from home – online learning course #Review

Posted on January 30, 2020January 30, 2020

Disclaimer: I received this course free of charge in exchange for my honest thoughts.

Working from home is becoming more and more popular, whether it be to fit in with the children’s schooling and routine or be it you’ve had enough or working for others and want more independence and of course want to keep more of the money you earn for yourself, working from home is a wonderful experience as long as you can motivate yourself to do so.

It wasn’t a job I actually set out to do, I was happy as a Nanny and then running my own childcare agency but with small children, the time constraints of being away from home for 12 hour working days just wasn’t ideal, as due to the struggle I actually had in becoming a Mother, I wanted to have some time out and enjoy it. I set to have a year off when Emmy was around 15 months old (I’d returned to working again when she was only 3 months old), to enjoy my young daughter and then eventually return to work. I set up this blog when she was 18 months and a year after that it started making me money, it wasn’t long after Harry was born that I realised returning to a career as a Nanny would be near on impossible, juggling my own children was hard enough let alone anyone else’s too so decided to see if this blog could provide the income I needed to stay home.

It does, almost 9 years after starting out I can say it’s become more than just a hobby, it provides me with a full-time income and is something I love doing. I am proved with opportunities to meet some of the nicest people, to work with some amazing companies and brands and travel to wonderful and exciting places too – what isn’t to love? And, it’s a bonus that I can earn more now working from home than I did working 12 hour days as a Nanny, all while spending as much time as I can with the children.

I started this blog on a whim, and it paid off but that’s not to say I know all I can know and am done learning. I love to teach myself new things – If I need to change something on the website I look up how to change the HTML and code my own changes, I love learning to use the latest photo editing tools and teaching myself to use tools such as Canva to create my images/Pinterest images. I will read up on new ways to share posts, to schedule tweets and anything which can make the job easier. Which is why I was very keen to take a look at the online course on Work from home jobs, as it covers all from Getting Started And Monetising Five Legitimate Work From Home Jobs.

Work from Home jobs online course review

This course is in video format lasting 2 hours, delivered on the Udemy platform by Marguerite in a chatty format which is split into 5 sections and then each section has sub-sections. Delivered in this format means you can stop, pause and complete at your own pace.

If you want to do a section at a time you can or you could complete all in one sitting – whichever works best for you.

Section 1 – Course Content

This section is broken down into 4 mini sections with the longest being 6 minutes long.

Marguerite begins with an introduction as to why she works from home and a few of the benefits then goes on to explain “Understanding your WHY” – this is the reason why you want to work from home, what you plan to get from it etc.

Next up is discipline – something I struggle with on a daily basis, she talks about ways to cut down your procrastination, something I definitely need to do myself. I am very good at not surfing Facebook daily during periods I need to be working, however, that washing machine needs emptying as does the dishwasher – while those are, of course, jobs which need doing, I need to remember that I am working even it is at home so need to step back and refocus and find the time for those jobs at a later date – I wrote about the jobs I end up doing at home instead of working previously.

Throughout the course, you are invited to pause the video and write down your thoughts and answer the prompts which I have found really helpful in looking back over after the course has ended and going forward.

The first deals with creating the best working environment for yourself and gives examples of things you can do to help keep you focused, such as:

  • Turning off notifications on your laptop
  • Putting your phone on silent
  • Keeping your desk clear to keep you focused on the job in hand
  • There are more helpful ideas throughout the course, but it’s a paid course, so I’m not going to give all those away here

These are great suggestions, I often find I have multiple tabs open while working, my email being one of them – this means I can see when I’ve a new message but then means I head over to answer than instead of finishing the task in hand first.

Sections 2 and 3

These sections talk more about other ways you can integrate making money from home if you already have a website or an online following. It does talk about getting started and how long you should give yourself to build up an audience if you haven’t already started.

I would suggest this part is most beneficial to those of you who are just starting out but have the basic website or online social media followings already in the pipelines or earlier days.

Having established my site over 9 years, the affiliate marketing section was a little too basic for me, and I do already dip my toe into that already, but if you’ve never looked into it at all as a means of making money, then you will find some very useful tips, tricks and guidelines which you’ll be able to put into action as soon as the course is over, and that information is delivered in a way you will easily understand.

Section 4 – Freelancing

This is something I do myself and Marguerite gives lots of examples of ways you can work as a freelancer to make money from home.

Whatever your skillset, you will find you have something to give to someone else and to market that.

She gives examples of skills you may have and how you can upsell those to potential clients and also goes on to share how you go about finding those clients.

Throughout this course, Marguerite’s upbeat and cheerful manner makes you want to keep listening, to pause and write the lists of ideas she asks for. She makes it sounds so easy, which of course it isn’t but she also doesn’t give unrealistic goals, telling you it could take 3 – 6 months to build up your following etc.

Freelancing, for me, is one of the best ways I make money from home but knowing your worth can be hard and setting your prices in such a competitive market even harder. There is a section in this course dedicated to just that – setting up your pricing and your package deals.

The rest of the course

As per the above sections of the course, it is in a very chatty and fun format, giving a few more ideas of jobs you can do from home – explaining how to sell yourself, how to apply and what to add into introductory emails/applications to help make yourself shine and stand out from the others.

Of course, if you are wanting to work from home – you’ll have to ensure you have a really good internet connection and a backup option should that fail for any reason.

This course if for you if you are ready to jump into working from home, have a basic idea of your audience already and want a little encouragement to take that next step.

Due to the jolly, chatty and friendly nature of the videos, you’ll find yourself feeling upbeat and ready to embrace that next step.

If you want to read more about this course before you jump in then you’ll find a full course overview here and you can also learn more about Marguerite and why she is qualified to teach you all you’ll need to know.
