It happens every time. You have an upcoming doctor or dentist appointment, and your child is terrified of going. They’re anxious and afraid, meaning it’s incredibly hard to try and leave the house. Some parents don’t want to deal with this to the point that they skip healthcare appointments. If you care about your child’s health, you’ll do anything to ensure they always attend regular checkups.
How do you do this if they’re so scared? There are ways to ease their fears and help your kids overcome the anxiety of seeing a healthcare professional. It won’t necessarily be easy, but given time you should see the desirable results.
See children’s specialists
Taking your children to doctors or dentists without experience seeing children is the worst thing you can do. If you have been going to the same doctor for years, but they don’t really deal with kids, find another doctor to take your children to. The same goes for dentists; make sure they see a children’s dentist instead of one that never (or rarely) sees kids.
Why? Because kid’s healthcare professionals have been trained to work with young children. They’ll know how to interact with your children and create a better and more relaxed environment. Seeing someone that doesn’t usually see kids can lead to a really bad first experience that makes your child scared forever. You can find a dentist near to you by searching for “dentist Warrington” or your local area.
Reward them for going
It’s the greatest parenting trick in the book. Reward your children when they go to the doctor or complete a dental checkup. Maybe you get them a little toy or buy them a small treat. It’s up to you, but the point is you start making the connection in their brain between going to the doctor/dentist and getting something nice.
As a result, they should gradually stop fearing the appointments and may even look forward to them. They’ll know that something good is coming after, which makes it much easier for them to deal with what comes before. Just try to pick a good reward system and don’t get carried away. It’s kind of counterintuitive to take your kid to the dentist and reward them with loads of sugary stuff!
Have a positive attitude
Children learn a lot about their feelings by watching their parents. If you have a negative attitude toward health appointments, so will they. How can you expect a child to overcome their fear of the dentist if you act all stressed and scared yourself?
You have to set a good example for them by maintaining a positive attitude. This helps them see the appointments as a positive thing that they don’t have to worry about. If mummy and daddy are anxious beforehand, the kids will copy them.
Some parents think it’s normal for kids to be afraid of healthcare professionals, but this isn’t true. They’re only scared if they have bad experiences or you make them scared. Feel free to use the tips above to see if they help your children overcome their fear of doctors, dentists, and any other person in a white coat.
