Family life can get pretty busy. You might have to take the kids to school, go to work, clean, cook and make time for yourself. It’s understandable if you feel like you need a break from time to time. And although summer vacations conjure images of sunshine and warm beaches, winter breaks can be just as rewarding. So, here are three great places for you and your family to visit this winter.
Skiing in Scotland
A skiing trip makes for a great family break. There’s snow, unsurprisingly, but there are also warm log cabins where you can relax after a hard day hitting the slopes. While many of the major ski resorts are located in mainland Europe or the US, Scotland has some fantastic ones of its own.
The Lecht Ski Centre in the Eastern Cairngorms is one of the most family-friendly resorts that Scotland has to offer because it has a number of smaller pistes that are ideal for little ones and beginners. It is also one of the quieter resorts north of the border, which means less time spent queuing and more time skiing. The Alpine Lodge also makes for a cosy resting place, serving cake, chocolate and mulled wine.
The great thing about a family visit to this part of Scotland is that you can drive to Aberdeen to enjoy the city’s many sights or simply take in the picturesque natural scenery of the rest of the Cairngorms National Park.
Avoiding the cold in the Capital
If you’re worried that a winter break might test your children’s attention spans, then a trip to London is a must. There’s so much to see and do here that you can quickly switch from one activity to the next if you notice anyone starting to lose interest. And what’s more, the capital really comes alive in winter.
The Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and The V&A, all located in South Kensington, will keep families entertained for hours, if not days, and will give you some respite from the wintry weather. The ice rink outside the Natural History Museum or at the Tower of London will also give you the chance to show off your skating skills to the rest of the family. London also has pantomimes to enjoy, Christmas markets and much more.
London is ideal for family holidays because the public transport is so good that you can be based out in the suburbs or in the very heart of the city and you’ll still be able to visit all the sights on your itinerary. We love to stay in London be that for a family break or a relaxed child free break.
Storytime in the snow
If your family loves reading and getting lost in a good book, then a winter break to the Chiltern Hills is definitely worth considering. Nearby, in the city of Oxford, you’ll find the Story Museum, which boasts exhibitions, installations and events all designed to stimulate your imagination. Not too far away in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, families will also be able to enjoy the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. You can explore the places that inspired some of his much-loved tales and even enjoy some Whizzpoppers and Oompa Loompa lunch bags at the museum’s Café Twit.
