4 Hard Water Solutions to Consider

Posted on February 12, 2019

**Collaborative post**

Hard water can become a problem in one’s home if not dealt with in good time. Most homes that use hard water experience build up in their plumbing system and adverse reactions on the skin. The impact of hard water will be determined by the amount of calcium and magnesium in the water. In most cases, the higher the level of these two minerals the harder the water making it tougher to use. It is therefore essential to seek solutions to soften the water to enjoy using it with no adverse effects on one’s body or home plumbing system.

Finding the right solution for your hard water problems may require some trial and error in the beginning. However, it is advisable to measure the level of hardness of the water using test kits or strips to make it easier to choose a viable solution. Some of the hard water solutions that have proven to be doable include:

    Installation of water softeners

Water softeners are one of the most popular ways of solving a hard water problem. The softeners are available in two types, namely, ion exchange and salt-free with the former being a favourite in many households. Even so, it is essential to look for more information and compare the types of softeners available in the market before settling on one. Most of the softeners are installed on the pipes that supply water to the home resulting in soft water flowing from the taps in the kitchen and other parts of the house.

  • Boiling water

Boiling water to be used in the household is another way of removing hardness from the water. Boling is ideal for water that has temporary hardness often caused by impurities that are broken down and settle on the surface of the container. To regain flavour to the boiled water, consider pouring it from one container to another for a while to restore air lost during boiling.

  • Invest in a water filter

Apart from boiling, you can also use a water filter to remove impurities that are always present in hard water. The filter can be attached to the kitchen faucets or be sold at as a pitcher making it possible to soften water as it is being poured for drinking. Most of the filters used for purifying the water also help regain the natural taste of water, making it a win-win situation for everyone.

  • Use white vinegar

White vinegar can neutralize minerals like calcium that are present in hard water. The natural acid is ideal for softening laundry water and avoiding stains on clothes that often seen when using hard water. Ensure that the vinegar is loaded as part of the wash to ensure the clothes come out spotless. Most times, the strong smell of vinegar is rinsed off during the final washing leaving clothes smelling fresh and clean.

Overall, softening hard water is not a complicated process and can be some within the shortest time possible giving you a chance to enjoy using soft water in your home.
