Going on a long car journey can be difficult, particularly when you have young children in tow. Not only do you need to try and keep them entertained, but you have to keep them safe throughout. With a bit of planning, you can alleviate some of the pressure and trials that you may face, which will make the trip a lot easier for everyone involved.
Here are 4 ways to keep your family safe on a long car journey.
Car seats
When it comes to any car journey with young kids, the right car seats are a must. Not all seats are suitable for every vehicle, so as well as being weight and height appropriate, they must also be compatible. A car seat will drastically reduce the chances of your child being hurt or injured in the event of a collision and will help to stop them from being able to move around while you are trying to drive.
If you don’t already have car seats and aren’t sure which may be right for you, speak to a specialist who will be able to advise you. Keeping your kids safe is paramount, so don’t take any unnecessary risks.
Insurance
Regardless of how good a driver you are, accidents can happen. Auto insurance will provide you with protection should you be involved in any kind of collision, so before heading off, make sure that your policy is valid and provides the cover you need. If your policy is due for renewal and you aren’t sure which provider to go for, a comparison site should help narrow down your choices.
If cost is an issue, most insurers will allow you to pay monthly instead of annually for a slightly higher premium.
Have your car checked over
The last thing you want when on a long journey is to break down, but it can happen. Having your car checked over before you leave will vastly reduce the risk. Being stranded on the side of the road can be a nightmare and, if you have children with you, can also be hazardous – especially if you are on the freeway.
If you don’t already have breakdown cover, it is another essential that you should take care of before you depart. In the event of a breakdown, you can make a call and someone should be able to help you within a matter of hours.
Avoid distractions
When children are cooped up in a vehicle for a long time, they can become bored or start to play up. When you are driving, you must stay focused so make sure that you have things to keep your children entertained. A movie playing on a DVD player or tablet will offer a couple of hours of a reprieve, and a bag of snacks should stop them from feeling hungry.
Plan regular pit stops before you leave so you can accommodate toilet breaks and give your legs a bit of a reprieve from sitting. Being organized in advance will ensure that you reach your destination in one piece with as little stress as possible.
