As a parent, the thought of travelling with children can be daunting. Whether it’s a road trip, a flight across the country, or even just a day out, the potential for chaos seems ever-present. However, after years of family adventures, I’ve gathered some invaluable tips that have helped turn our travels into memorable and enjoyable experiences for everyone involved.
Here are A few tips for travelling with Children
1. Plan, Plan, Plan:
The key to successful family travel lies in the meticulous planning stages. Having a well-thought-out itinerary can significantly reduce stress from accommodation to transportation and activities. Get the kids involved in the planning process too; let them choose activities or attractions they’re excited about.
2. Pack Wisely:
Packing efficiently is crucial when travelling with children. Create a checklist of essentials, including clothing, snacks, entertainment, and any medications. Pack light, but don’t skimp on the essentials. A well-stocked travel bag can be a lifesaver during long journeys.
3. Snacks and Hydration:
Hungry and thirsty kids and up leading to cranky and grumpy kids. Keep a variety of healthy snacks and plenty of water on hand to keep hunger and dehydration at bay. Pack snacks that are easy to eat on the go and avoid anything too messy or sugary – the last thing you want is hyper children when travelling due to too much sugar.
4. Entertainment Options:

Long journeys can be tedious for children, so be prepared with entertainment options to keep them occupied. A parent’s best friend is a table loaded with games, books, and movies. Remember to bring headphones to keep the peace in crowded spaces. Audiobooks are also a great resource; you can either add them to the children’s tablets/phones or play them on the car stereo for the whole family to enjoy. Here are a few of our favourite audiobooks.
5. Take Breaks:
Travelling with children requires patience and flexibility. Plan regular breaks during long journeys to allow kids to stretch their legs, use the restroom, and burn off some energy. Use rest stops as an opportunity to explore new surroundings or enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors; it doesn’t always mean you have to spend money in the service stations when taking your breaks – you could use the bathroom facilities and eat a pre-prepared picnic outside. This is a great opportunity for the children to expel some excess energy before getting back into the car.
6. Set Realistic Expectations:
Accept that travelling with children may not always go according to plan. Be flexible and prepared to adapt to unexpected changes or delays. Embrace the journey as part of the adventure, rather than focusing solely on the destination. Travel sickness may need to be factored into your journeys, so plan ahead with travel sickness bands, and anti-sickness tablets and be prepared with buckets and a change of clothes. Harry suffers from travel sickness, so we are always prepared for this before heading off on our journeys.
7. Safety First:
Prioritise safety at all times. Invest in quality car seats, booster seats, and travel strollers to ensure your child’s safety during transit. Teach children about stranger danger and establish clear guidelines for staying together in crowded places.
8. Keep Calm and Carry On
Children can sense stress and anxiety, so it’s essential to stay calm and composed, even in challenging situations. Maintain a positive attitude and lead by example, showing your children that travelling can be fun and exciting.
9. Involve the Kids:
Encourage children to participate actively in the travel experience. Whether it’s navigating with a map, documenting the journey with photos, or journaling about their adventures, involving kids in the process fosters a sense of ownership and excitement.
10. Create Memories:
Above all, cherish the moments spent together as a family. Travelling with children provides countless opportunities for bonding, exploration, and creating lasting memories. Embrace the laughter, the mishaps, and the unexpected adventures that make family travel truly unforgettable. You can also use it as a learning experience for school by creating a holiday journal of all your adventures – use a scrapbook to add photographs and maps from your days out and get the children to write a little about each day.
In conclusion, while travelling with children certainly presents its challenges, with careful planning, patience, and a positive mindset, it can also be incredibly rewarding. By following these tips, you can confidently embark on your family adventures, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Happy travels!
