4 Ways to Manage Your Life Insurance Policy to Ensure Suitable Coverage

Review After Important Life Events

No matter what age you purchased your life insurance policy, things in your life will continually change. When managing your life insurance policy, it’s better to review it too often than not often enough. After major life events happen between you and your beneficiaries, ensure that your coverage is still suitable. If you find out that you need to increase or decrease your premium, speak with your insurance provider, and they may be able to lower or raise it for you. Here are a few examples of life events that could shift your policy:

  • Getting married
  • Having a child
  • Changing jobs
  • Buying a new house
  • Taking out a business loan
  • Refinancing your home
  • Changes to you/your spouse’s health
  • Getting divorced or remarried Take a Look at Your Plan Once a Year

As mentioned above, it’s better to review your policy too often than not enough. Checking and taking a look at your plan once a year will make it a routine for you and your family. Add your life insurance policy into your financial housekeeping to keep it as up-to-date as possible. The annual checkup ensures that the coverage is still sufficient and notifies you of any significant life changes within the year. It will also give you and your significant other a chance to ensure that the beneficiaries are still who you want them to be and make sure the payout is enough to cover the costs you would like them to cover.

Update and Inform Any Beneficiaries

There may come a time where you need to make a change to your life insurance policy. In most cases, your beneficiaries are the reason that you purchased this policy. It’s essential to keep them up to date on any changes you make to your policy, so they know what to expect and are kept in the loop. Whether it’s every year with your yearly review or every few years, review your beneficiaries. If you did not have any life changes, but your beneficiaries have, you may need to update your policy amount. You want to make sure that there will be no struggles if there comes a time where they receive the policy payout.

Change Your Policy, If Needed

If you need to change any part of your policy, get the changes done as soon as possible. Do not push these changes off because if they are pushed off far enough, they will not get done. If something tragic happens to you before you make the changes you wanted to, your policy will not be up to date with your needs. In most cases, if you are looking to update your beneficiaries or need more coverage, it may be as simple as filling out a form. Otherwise, you may need to reapply for a new policy altogether.

Purchasing a policy is a massive step in the right direction for protecting you and your loved ones. The next big step is to make sure you manage your life insurance policy promptly.
