Last year we reviewed the wonderful slushy maker from ChillFactor, in case you missed this you can see our review here.
Now ChillFactor has brought out a fantastic new ice cream maker and we have been putting that through its paces.
It looks identical to the slushy maker with the only difference being this looks like a giant ice cream in a cone.
The idea is you pop the bottom half into the freezer for a good few hours until it is completely frozen, I suggest overnight and then it is ready for lunchtime the next day.
[AdSense-B]Inside the box you get the ice cream maker, a long spoon/straw and a recipe book.
Once ours had been in the commercial freezer overnight we tried out chocolate ice cream first off as this is Emmy’s favourite, now the recipe says to use single cream however my local shop didn’t have any so we tried with double cream. It does say in the book that double can be used and it makes a creamier/richer ice cream so thought it was worth a try.
To make you fill the cap with 100ml cream, squeeze in chocolate syrup (2 tablespoons) and 1 teaspoon of caster sugar (this is optional and I didn’t use). Tip it all into the cone and screw the lid back on. Shake well to mix the ingredients (do make sure the lid is on well) and then squeeze the sides well. This releases the frozen ice from the cone and freezes the cream.
We found it didn’t work with the double cream as it froze in lumps and definitely wasn’t soft serve as promised in fact none of us liked this.
Undeterred we washed it all out, popped in the freezer again and tried again the next day with single cream. Again we tried chocolate and after much squeezing – Emmy’s favourite part we had soft serve ice cream. It worked!
Now it’s definitely not ice cream van style ice cream but it was definitely ice cream, and most importantly it was VERY easy to make.
Next time Emmy asks for ice cream and I know I’ve not been shopping I don’t need to worry as this now lives in my freezer.
She loved the spoon doubling up as a straw as it mean she could let it melt and drink it.
The recipe book also includes sorbet recipes which I will try out one evening as the kids don’t like these but I can confirm that it makes a mean Bailey’s ice cream with 100ml of single cream and a generous shot of Bailey’s – well I had to try just for review purposes didn’t I?
We are loving this so much that I will be buying a second so that Harry has one too – Emmy doesn’t do sharing very well!
