Emmy’s hair donation to The Little Princess Trust

You’ll have all seen many pictures of Emmy, I do share a lot of the children so it would have been hard to miss her mop of wild long thick hair. We used to call it her mane as it was just so wild, unmanageable at times.

She’s always loved her hair, although hated having it washed and loathed to brush it and when it was so frizzy and long made it really hard to tame it for school and get into any kind of updo.

When she did allow me to wash and heavily condition it she would love nothing more than sitting in her room together playing hairdressers, she would let me brush it and plait it, try out new styles and plan how she was going to have it for school. This only happened when it was still semi-wet and didn’t hurt her to have it brushed. Being so long and thick it was rather hard to manage when dry hence she wouldn’t brush or do anything with it most of the time.

As the weather had been getting much hotter and summer upon us she was struggling with the heat from her long hair. It was heavy and even put up in a bun it would give her a headache from being so heavy, topped with her spending most of the time in the pool it was time for a haircut.

I always let the children make the decisions on their haircuts, if they want to keep it long then that’s fine, if they want to go shorter I will not stop them as it is their hair after all – Harry recently had striped cut into the sides of his and he loved it and is currently wanting a skinhead but he could have changed his mind by the time he gets to the barbers.

Emmy wanted short hair, as short as my recent hair cut so we had a lovely discussion about making that major change count and helping others at the same time.

I told her about The Little Princess Trust, explained to her that people had their hair cut and that that hair is then sent into the trust to turn into wigs for the children who are going through cancer treatments etc and losing or have lost their hair. She was familiar with wigs and chemotherapy treatments as her beloved Nanny wore wigs after she lost her hair during her treatments. She was very keen to donate her hair to help others and spoke of little else up until her appointment yesterday.

She was very nervous but didn’t change her mind and yesterday it was time for that major haircut.

Donated hair needs to be washed and dried and then plaited or sectioned before being cut, our lovely hairdresser was actually more nervous about this cut than Emmy was.

After sectioning it off it was time for the cut and then there was no turning back.

Emmy had the hugest smile on her face for the entire time and it was a beaming smile once her new look was revealed. Look how proud she was of her hair donation to The Little Princess Trust.

She actually managed to donate around 11.5 inches of hair (I know it looks like 10 in the video but her hair has curls to it so when pulled taught it was much longer).

We are so very proud of her for donating so much of her beautifully thick hair, now we need to convince her that brushing her hair is actually a very good thing and something she HAS to do every day and with a selection of hairdressing combs this should now be a far easier job – after all, there’s not as much hair now.
