If you’re looking to get the best from your cycling adventures on the west coast of Italy, then scouting out the best available routes ahead of time is essential. Along the Amalfi coast, there’s a considerable variety of routes available, geared toward cyclists of all levels of experience. A trip through this part of the world on two wheels can be inspiring, and to get the best from yours, you’ll need to plan it.
Planning your bike trip: flights & entry requirements
If you’re flying to the Amalfi Coast, then you’ll generally have two airports to choose from: the one in Salerno and the one in Naples. The former is smaller, but it’s closer to the coast itself.
Before you set out, you’ll need to make sure that your passport is valid and in date, and that you have the right insurance. A GHIC card will cover you against any cycling injuries you might sustain during your travels.
Choosing your bike & route options
You’ll also need to choose between guided Amalfi Coast tours, and self-guided ones. If you opt for the latter, you’ll save money, but you may also miss on the insight that an experienced guide can offer. You’ll also have to deal with the logistics of getting your luggage from place to place – which can be something of a pain.
Many popular itineraries take riders from Cilento to the Amalfi Coast, but the length of your trip should be decided by your level of experience. Push yourself too hard, and you might not have a great time.
Scenic highlights & daily itinerary
The Amalfi Coast offers a wealth of sights, sounds, and experiences. You might be taken along winding coastal routes, from which you can get clear views of the sea, as well as along fragrant lemon terraces. Positano, Minori, Maiori, and Amalfi itself are all worth visiting. You might also mix things up slightly by booking a boat trip to Capri, where you can check out the amazing Blue Grotto.
Safety, current travel updates & what to expect
The good news is that Italy is a safe country. However, you’ll need to be aware of certain specific security threats, like pickpockets in crowded areas. There are also large events, like the Jubilee in Rome, which might put additional demand on accommodation in the country. This takes place throughout 2025, but since it’s largely confined to the Eternal City, it’s not something that most Amalfi Coast travellers will need to worry about. What is worth worrying about is the Foreign Office’s travel advice, which should be consulted just before you travel.
What is worth considering is the fact that Uber are now offering boat and helicopter services, which might provide you with a way of integrating new destinations into your cycling adventures.
