Be Careful What You Feed Your Dog This Christmas - Homemade Dog Biscuit Recipe

Tis the season to be jolly and it is certainly the season for overindulging. I always plan to not overeat but with the fridge filled with cheeses and pates, the cupboards loaded with mince pies, selection boxes and Christmas cake and then boxing day sponsored by turkey sandwiches – it’s rather impossible for me to have just the one say no to all my favourite treats, especially the cheese and crackers.

I am sure I’m not alone, in fact, I have known friends to dress for Christmas with clothes which are a little big or have expanding waistlines – a very sensible move I have to say.

While these may be some of our favourite treats this festive period we have to remember that they can actually be very harmful and toxic to our four-legged friends.

Chocolate, mince pies, Christmas pudding, onion gravy and alcohol are all poisonous for our pets and the bones from carcasses are a dangerous choking hazard so please do remember not to leave these in reach of your pets because the very last thing you want to do if visit the vets instead of celebrating with the family.

Homemade Dog Biscuit Recipe

If you are looking for a special treat for your favourite furry friend then why not try making some yourself, this recipe is so easy even the kids can get involved:

Honey and Banana Dog Treats Recipe:

Ingredients:

250 ml water
1 banana, mashed
1 tablespoon of honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
600g whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C, and line the baking trays with greaseproof paper.

Add the water, mashed banana, honey, vanilla and egg to a large bowl and mix together
Stir in the whole-wheat flour and baking powder
Mix together in an electric mixer for a few minutes until combined (you can use a wooden spoon just keep mixing until all the ingredients are combined)
Turn out onto a floured surface and knead until no longer sticky

Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into mini shapes – you can use cookie cutters, play-doh cutters or even make your own template to cut around.
Bake in the oven until lightly browned for around 20 minutes
Turn off the oven and leave the biscuits to cool for around 30 minutes
