How to Be More Physically Active as a Family

Posted on September 28, 2020

**Collaborative post**

Growing research suggests that a sedentary lifestyle will put you at a higher risk of several health conditions and diseases including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and even more serious issues like cancer, stroke and heart attacks. As a parent, you know that there are several benefits to keeping your family as active as possible. Not only will it improve everybody’s physical health, but staying active can also boost mental wellbeing and help you bond as a family too. The good news is that there are plenty of fun and easy ideas that you might want to try to boost your activity levels as a family.

Playing Sports

Playing sports together can be a lot of fun and a great way to improve the family bond. You can get together with other relatives or friends to play games like football or basketball or play virtual sports using a monitor or a games console at home, which is great for a rainy day. Friendly competitions between the family can get everybody excited about taking part and you could even come up with fun prizes for the winners. A golf launch monitor is the perfect training tool for anybody who wants to improve their golf game and can be a great way for the whole family to be more active at home.

Go for Walks

Walking and exploring new places as a family can be a lot of fun. Whether you head to your local parks and green areas or take day trips to areas more further afield, getting out in nature can be an excellent experience for everybody. Not only is walking in nature good for you physically but getting some fresh air and vitamin D can really boost your mood and lead to less stress for everybody.

Do Something You Enjoy

Exercising is almost more fun when you actually enjoy what you’re doing, so get together as a family to figure out what your favourites are and find ways to incorporate them into your lives. This could mean finding activities that everybody enjoys to take part in together or doing exercises separately either on your own or with friends. Don’t be afraid to try new things so that you can figure out what it is you really enjoy and help everyone stay motivated about being active.

Support a Good Cause

If you and your family enjoy helping others, then charity sports events or getting sponsored for being active can be a great way to stay motivated to be more active and healthy while giving back to the community. Sign up for a community event like a fun run or a sports day, or ask your friends and family members to sponsor you to run a marathon, do a long bicycle ride or swim a certain number of lengths.

Make it Part of Your Routine

Just like you might have mealtime and bedtime routines in your home, it’s a good idea to get your family into a fitness routine too. This could be going for a walk or bike ride every day before sitting down for dinner, playing sports games together on the Xbox before settling down to watch a film at the weekend or going swimming together on certain days of the week. Find a time and exercises that work for you and by sticking to the same routine, it’ll become something that you all get used to as just a regular part of the day or week.

Any good parent wants to not only be healthy themselves but also help their children to achieve optimum health as they grow up. Being an active family can help reduce your family’s risk of several diseases.
