Any parent knows how difficult it can be to persuade children to spend more time outdoors, in nature, instead of being in front of a screen all day. Kids of all ages are hooked on technology and become fascinated with phones and computers at a very early age, which is detrimental to their health in the long run.
The benefits of spending more time in nature are countless, both for our physical and mental wellbeing. It also helps children have a healthy development, and that is why camping is such a great family activity. However, if your little ones are still reluctant when it comes to outdoor fun, there are things you can do to make camping more appealing to them.
Anticipation is essential
If you want your kids to enjoy camping, you have to spark their curiosity and make them feel excited. If you can turn something into a game or an adventure, you’ll definitely grab their attention. The same goes for camping and outdoor activities. The key is to build their anticipation.
If you are creative enough, you could even imagine a treasure hunt or some mystery that needs to be solved. Talk to your little ones about interesting wild plants and the fascination of the night sky. Get them excited about learning new things in the wild and playing fun games. Also, let them play with some of the camping gear; this will help them create their own stories.
Plan your camping trip
Children will have fun if you are relaxed as well. And the best way to make sure that you can also enjoy yourself is to plan ahead and be prepared. Choose a good tent and make sure you know how to set it up before going camping. For an alternative to classic tents, you can read more about truck tents in this in-depth review.
Engage your kids by allowing them to help you pack and learn more about the camping gear you are using. Most children would love to try sleeping in sleeping bags or an improvised tent in their room. Ask their opinion about what they would like to eat on your camping trip and get them excited about building a campfire or having toasted marshmallows.
Also, try to find an interesting location where you can do some sightseeing, fishing, hiking, or some other fun activity that will keep your kids entertained. Just do your research, there are a lot of great camping destinations out there.
Include their friends
What could be even more fun for kids than going on a camping trip? Going on a trip with their friends. This way, they get the chance to share all those wonderful new experiences with someone their own age. Plus, it minimizes sibling rivalry and allows everybody to feel more at ease.
Parents can also benefit from including other families because they can share responsibilities and help one another. Just make sure you don’t overdo it. Inviting close friends or relatives is one thing, but having too many people on your camping trip is another thing. You don’t want to become overwhelmed.
Don’t be too strict
Some children don’t like camping because they feel forced to participate in boring activities and because they’re not allowed to take any of their favourite toys or games with them. Don’t make the mistake of being too strict and having a very precise schedule for all the activities you plan to do.
Allow your children to bring some toys on your trip, or even better, their bikes. You want them to discover on their own that being out in nature is more fun, instead of forcing them to give up toys or playing games on their phone. Plan some fun activities, but also allow your kids to explore, play together, and simply enjoy being outdoors without having a strict schedule.
Even when things don’t go exactly as you’ve planned, just try to stay in the moment, have fun and relax. Family trips are always unpredictable, and things can turn out to be different from what you expected, but as long as you are flexible, you will be ready to manage anything that comes your way. Things don’t need to be perfect to create wonderful memories.
