The living room is most the used part of the home. It is where we spend our evenings, where guests sit when they visit and the hub of our homes. That’s why we should spend extra time getting to know the space we have in the living room and moving furniture around to a place which fits our lifestyle and needs.

If you have a small space to work with, it can be a great idea to place your sofa or chairs in the centre of the room. This will act as a focal point for the room and if you turn the chairs to face each other it will encourage conversation. To really set the whole room off you could add a coffee table in front of the seats where people can put their drinks and food.

If you aren’t sure what kind of arrangement you want for your living room yet, the easiest thing you can do is turn the furniture to face either a stunning view out of your window, or a focal point such as a TV. This is the most common way to arrange furniture and it means that everything in your home is aligned.

When you have a small space for your main living area, it can become a little stressful deciding where to put everything in order to make the most out of the little space you’ve got on hand. However, you can still use some tricks to make the room feel bigger than it really is. The first trick you can use is to install a large mirror along one of the walls. This will immediately make the whole room look much bigger and you will also reflect any light coming from outside.

When you are picking furniture for your living room, it is important to make the most of the space you’ve got and be a bit clever with where things go. A great idea would be to first of all strip the room and place everything into Household storage. Once you have a blank canvas you will begin to envision the different ways you can make the most of your space. You might decide to buy smaller, more contemporary furniture for the space or even invest in multi-purpose furniture to save even more space. A lot of the time it is difficult to know what changes you can make if you don’t have a blank canvas, so removing your current furniture is the only way you can truly see the room as new and make a fresh start.

When you design your main room think about what kind of lighting you will have. If you already have large windows which penetrate through the whole space then you can keep it simple with a light fitting and a small lamp for the evenings. However if your room is a little dark, but some cold temperature light bulbs to fit into lamps for different corners of the room. Warm temperature light is more yellow and it can make your space feel even darker sometimes than it really is.

When it comes to the media corner of the room, you will most likely have a lot of different devices and loads of cables stashed away on the floor. This can make the room look messy and smaller than it really is. A great solution for this issue is to install a cabinet which has a hole in the back where you can feed cables through and hide them from the rest of the room. It will mean your floor is no longer cluttered with cables and you won’t have to worry about them being a trip hazard.

When you come to finishing off the room and adding those personal touches to make it your own, there are several different types of item you can add to take advantage of the style. First of all is adding greenery. Plants are a great way to breathe some life into your room and the green will always lift any design you have and add more depth. Either small plants on your shelves or a large plant on the floor are both great ideas. The next thing is soft furnishings. By simply adding a patterned or brightly coloured cushion to your sofa you can add an extra layer to the design of the room and make it really stand out from the rest of the home. A soft throw will also provide a blanket for those cold winter nights with the family.
