Sometimes, as parents, we can fall short regarding responsibility, and one way to reinforce this is how we teach kids responsibility in the home. Let’s face it, as our kids grow, we sometimes still feel the need to do everything for them. Whether that is making the evening meals, unloading the dishwasher, washing, or tidying their rooms. It can be that caring nature within us that still feels the need to protect our children and, therefore, be the one that does it all for them. But, this will only cause problems for them in the future. After all, we all have to grow up, pay bills, and be responsible for a home, pets, and children, so they will need to understand the basics at some point. But how can you teach kids responsibility in the home?
Why do we need to teach kids all about responsibility?
Responsibility comes in different ways, and your home life is an ideal way to instil the values of responsibility. But why is it so important? When you were growing up, did you have chores to do, things you needed to take care of? Perhaps you took yourself off to school or let yourself in at the end of the day. These days, children are pampered; there is no denying it. We go out of our way to help them with day-to-day life and take care of them. But will they be as confident as you were as an adult stepping into the big bad world? Possibly not. Teaching them the importance of responsibility and giving that trust will help set them up for the future.

Some of the ways to give kids responsibilities:
So now that you understand the importance of it, perhaps you are wondering what you can do. It is all about routine changes and implementing different ways to give your children responsibility. You can start this as early as 3 – 4 years, as there are some easy ways to help them understand what they are responsible for. Here are some of the ways you can do it.
- Tidying toys away or being responsible for their bedrooms
You can start this off from a young age simply by encouraging your child to put their toys away when they have finished. But as they get older, they can be responsible for cleaning and tidying their bedroom. This also highlights things such as cleanliness and being aware of their environment and its impact on them.
- Making their beds in the morning
One of the simple things you can ask them to do is make their beds in the morning. It becomes a daily habit which will also help them in the future. Add in opening their curtains to this and that’s another very easy thing for them to do themselves.
- Looking after a pet
Many families have pets, so why not give your child the responsibility of looking after a pet? They could feed them and check on their water bowls from a young age. As your child ages, they could clean pets’ cages out or take dogs for walks.
- Household chores
One of the obvious ways to help teach a child some responsibility is to give them some household chores. They could be in charge of the dishwasher or washing pots. Maybe setting the table or vacuuming the house. Think about the jobs you can delegate and then give them the responsibility of maintaining them.
- Walking to and from school
A big step for giving your child responsibility is to enable them to walk to and from school, if appropriate, to do so. This might involve giving them a key or giving them the trust that they will go to and from school safely.
- Pocket money and manage it
Our children need to learn everything about money, from managing money to understanding its value and how much things can cost. This is a life lesson that will serve them well in the future.
- In charge of homework and getting things done on time
Finally, take some pressure off you and give them the responsibility for their homework. Understanding deadlines, getting things done on time, and managing them can all be great life lessons for the workplace in the future.
How to do it
Now that you know what responsibilities you can give your child, you must set some boundaries. Reward them for doing all their chores, or monthly, reward them for maintaining something. You should also help them incorporate these tasks into their daily routine. For example, if they have household chores, highlight them when they need to be done.
Hopefully, these tips will help you to teach your kids responsibility in the home.
