For Christmas we gave Emmy her own Kindle as she had been using her Dad’s, we added a few of her favourite books to it and thought she would love it – but of course, it’s only fun when you are borrowing Daddy’s and she didn’t read it as much as we had hoped. Here we are sharing our Favourite Audio Books for Kids.

She does love reading but we found she was just too tired at bedtimes so for her birthday I purchased a lovely pink cd/radio player for her room and with it a bundle of Audio CD’s of her favourite books and some music CD’s too.

She loved it and can often be found dancing around her room singing along to music, just as I used to as a young child.

In the evenings if she is too tired to read we put on her Audio books and she falls asleep listening to them, they are a great way of taking in a story and enjoying it when she is too tired to concentrate, they also make long car journeys easier as we can all enjoy them together and it beats Paul’s talk radio which we all hate.

Audio books can be purchased on CD’s or you can download them onto tablets/Kids Kindle/smart phone or you can borrow the CD’s from your local library for a small fee or a great resource is Audible* an Amazon company purely for ALL your Audio needs – you’ll find everything you could possible need and much more here with everything sectioned into categories and age groups to make it easy for you to find.

HarperCollins asked which our favourites were so I thought it would be a good opportunity to share that list with you all.

Our Favourite Audio Books for Kids

  1. The David Walliams Collection
We have the whole collection, and it is really hard to pick a favourite from these. Emmy finds Gangster Granny hilarious, while I love Demon Dentist but quickly learned this isn’t one to listen to at bedtime.
Of course, with the latest release of The World’s Worst Children 2, this is now on our shopping list to purchase soon.
We all giggled at Ratburger, and Mr. Stink was one the kids enjoyed as they really liked the film.
  2. Beatrix Potter Stories
The tales of Peter Rabbit are always a winner in this household as are the stories of Mrs Tiggy-Winkle
  3. The Complete Chronicles of Narnia – C.S Lewis
This is a HUGE collection which plays for just over 15 hours, we are of course only a little way into listening but Emmy is really enjoying the story so far, and has seen the movies too which helps her to picture the characters.
  4. The Parent Agency – David Baddiel
The Parent Agency is what every child dreams of at some point in their life – here you can choose your own parents! This is exactly what happens to Barry, but of course, things never are that easy, are they……oh the things which can go wrong.
I dread to think the parents Emmy would choose if she had the choice, but I would lay money on them having no rules for bedtimes and junk food!
  5. The Enchanted Wood & The Magic Faraway Tree – Enid Blyton
I used to love Enid Blyton’s stories and have been reading my old storybooks to Emmy for many years. She now loves listening to these. I’m cheating here as this is, of course, 2 separate audio books but from the same collection.
  6. Famous Five – Enid Blyton
For Emmy’s birthday I gave her the entire famous five collection in a box set, these are stories I absolutely loved as a child and we have been reading a chapter or two most nights ever since. She is really enjoying listening to them, too, as the characters come to live a little more than when we read it. We are currently listening to Five on a Treasure Island
  7. The Worst Witch
Inspired by the new remake shows which Emmy would rush home from school to watch weekly, these are just as good as I remember them being as a child
  8. Pongwiffy: A witch of dirty habits – Kaye Umansky
Pongwiffy is a very smelly witch of very dirty habits. But she is a happy witch – until the day the gruesome gang of goblins move in next door and make her life miserable. So she goes to live with her not-so-best friend, Sharkadder, who tries to find her a new slum and a much-needed familiar. All they can come up with is a hamster from Amsterdam called Hugo. What an embarrassment! But Hugo is really an amazing hamster with hidden strengths….
  9. Fizzlebert Stump: The Boy Who Ran Away from the Circus (and Joined the Library)
Fizzlebert Stump is a young boy who lives in a travelling circus; although he gets to hang around with acrobats, play the fool with clowns, and put his head in a lion’s mouth every night, he’s the only kid there – and he’s bored. But then Fizz decides to join a library, and life suddenly gets a lot more exciting when a simple library card application leads to him being kidnapped by a pair of crazed pensioners!
  10. Bedtime meditation for kids – Christiane Kerr
OK, not actually an audio book but a calming CD to play at the end of the day to help relax and unwind while drifting off to sleep.

I would love to know what your children are listening to currently and what your suggestions are for when we have finished these.

I absolutely loved my audio books when I was a child 🙂 I actually still have a few of them and it’s tradition that every year I have to listen to “Christmas With The Crystals”!

Some of my favourites were The House At Pooh Corner, The “Sophie” series by Dick King Smith, Roald Dahl (I had Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, Charlie & the Great Glass Elevator, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, can’t remember what else!), The Worst Witch (I had a box set of the three original books, plus The Worst Witch All At Sea) and a Secret Seven/Famous Five tape I had which just had one story from each.
