Seven Fun-Packed Games Your Family Can Play Together

Posted on May 3, 2024

**Collaborative post**

After a week of school and long work hours, one way to laugh and connect with your family is to bring on the game nights! Plan fun-packed activities, toss in pretzels or nachos, water, and juice, and prepare for a night of competitiveness and fun. While adult players will find the perfect game for themselves on websites kids don’t typically visit, here are seven fun-packed games you and your family should try for your next game night!

Table Games

Don’t Break the Toilet Paper

Number of players: Two or more
Ages: Suitable for five and up
What’s needed: Partially filled glasses of water and rolls of toilet paper. Make that thick toilet paper, please!

This nail-biting game will keep you on the edge of your seat, even if you’re just a spectator. And you only need what you already have at home: some toilet paper rolls and partially filled glasses of water. At first, the rules seem simple, but this game can get intense fast. How to play? Toilet papers are spread across a long table, and glasses of water are placed on the tip of the toilet paper. Players are supposed to reel in the glass of water without breaking the toilet paper. The first player to reel in the glass, pick it up and drink wins.

Classic Jenga: How Do You Stack Up?

Number of players: Two or more
Ages: Suitable for five and up
What’s needed: A box of wooden Jenga blocks

If your kids love building blocks or you like stacking up your laundry (we won’t judge you), then this game is for you! Jenga is about how high you can stack 54 wood blocks into a tower, and then each player begins to pull blocks from the middle without the tower falling apart. Sound easy? Think again. Players may use only one hand at a time to pull out a loose block to place atop the tower, making the structure increasingly shaky. Are you getting nervous yet? We are! How does this end? When any part of the tower or structure collapses. The winner is the last player to successfully pull out a block and place it atop before the tower crumbles.

Sound and Focus Games

Marco Polo

Number of players: Two or more
Ages: Suitable for four and up
What’s needed: A blindfold

Now, this one will have you bursting at the seams (with laughter, that is). It’s like a hide-and-go-seek game, except you will seek with your ears rather than your eyes. To play, the group decides who will be “it”, and then that person is blindfolded while everyone else chooses a hiding spot (this is where it gets exciting and possibly messy). The person who is “it” walks around calling out “Marco”, and everyone must respond “Polo” from their hiding spot. The “seeker” then scrambles to find others by the sound of their voices, and when the person who’s “it” catches someone, that person becomes “it”. You can keep playing the game for as long as you’d like so that everyone can get a chance to play “it”. Did you see what we did there?

Concentration

Number of players: Four or more
Ages: Suitable for five and up
What’s needed: Focus!

No kidding, this game is called Concentration. It’s a game that depends on how well players can listen and focus. At the start of the game, players will agree on various categories that will be called out during the game. These categories may range from names of fruits, cars, countries, brands and much more – you decide. Once the game begins, concentration begins. One of the players will call out a name of a category, and the other players must respond without hesitation by calling out a name or thing that fits within that category. Nerve-racking, right? The first one to hesitate or call a name that doesn’t fit into the called category loses the game.

Video Games

Mario Kart Deluxe

Number of players: Up to four on a single system
Ages: Five and up
Platform: Nintendo Switch

Start your engines for this fun, multiplayer kart-racing video game with an edge. You can choose your character from the Mario universe, from Mario and Luigi to Princess Peach, Bowser, and beyond – you decide. Once you’re set, it’s all about finishing first and knocking off other players along the way. Despite being seven years old, this game is a classic and one of the best-selling video games of all time.

Overcooked!

Number of players: Up to four
Ages: Five and up
Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One

If your family loves cooking together, this is the perfect video game. In this game, you’ll work as a team, cooking, serving, and cleaning up together. To collect coins, you must complete your orders correctly and get bonus points for doing so before time runs out. The overall goal? Collect as many points as possible within the time limit.

Classic Card Game

Charades

Number of players: The more, the funnier
Ages: Suitable for five and up
What’s needed: Charade cards or an online search for picture ideas

This one is a family and party favourite, but don’t worry if this is your first time hearing about it – we’ve got you! Charades, in a nutshell, is a game of acting that you and your kids will love. It’s the ultimate pretend play party, so prepare to act and look silly doing it! You can play in two groups, say boys versus girls. Each group randomly selects cards with pictures of something (for example, a cow), but only the “actor” can see it and act it out so their group can guess it right (or wrong) for points. You’d think that’ll be easy to guess until you hear all the hilarious guesses that players blurt out!

Conclusion

Remember, whichever game you choose to play, family game nights are all about fun and unwinding. So, while you let out that competitive spirit, don’t forget to have a good laugh.
