It’s that time of year again now when school is beginning to wind down for the summer, the children, staff and parents are all certainly counting down to the summer holidays when there are no school runs and we can have a few lie-ins and restful days to kick of the start of our summer of fun.
It’s a hard time of year for the children, they have had moving on day at school and now know who their new teachers will be and where their new classrooms will be but they do struggle with change so it’s difficult for them to process their thoughts and emotions on this. Emmy, although will have a very lovely teacher next year in year 5, is sad as she’s formed such a lovely bond with her current teachers she will definitely struggle with the transitional period. It always takes her a few terms to adjust to new changes and we have tears and worries due to anxiety. It’s never anything against the new teachers, it never has been, she just struggles with changes. Throw in that a few of her friends are now moving over the summer holiday, one of her current teachers leaves at the end of this school year and she’ll not have her favourite teacher who she currently has and it’s beginning to get a little too much for her at the moment.
She is also worried about how hard the work will be in year 5 and addition tests and more homework too. I am actually hoping that the school don’t set holiday homework this summer as it would be nice to be able to properly switch off from school, kick back and enjoy some nice family time so she can forget this worry for a little while.
Harry, will also have a lovely teacher going into year 2, in fact, he will have the teacher Emmy had when she was in year 1. This teacher is just the sweetest, kind and gentle and she reminds me of Miss Honey from Matilda, there is also the added bonus that they will have 2 class guinea pigs which Harry is super excited about.
School reports came out last week and I couldn’t be prouder of both Emmy and Harry. Both were praised by their teachers for their caring attitudes, and both had their wicked sense of humour mentioned. They are both working to target for their age, although both need to concentrate more when it comes to independent working as they get distracted and also need to work faster during this time. Emmy’s confidence boost was mentioned too, and this has certainly been helped by having lovely teachers this year. They both have a lovely circle of friends but don’t stick to the same friends which is good, they are happy to move around friends at break and play times, each noting if someone is alone and playing with them or gaming games if they aren’t keen on what their main friends are playing.

Looking through their books during parents evening was lovely this week, it was clear to see what the teachers mean about getting distracted during independent working – there was one page in Harry’s book where he had written the same sentence about Panda’s loving Bamboo at least 6 times where he clearly lost track of what he was doing but it did make for very cute reading.
“Panda’s eat Bamboo because they love Bamboo, they really really love Bamboo and eat Bamboo because they love it”
Of course, some was misspelt and it went on a lot longer but I do love looking through their books especially when they are younger and spell things as they sound.
And in Emmy’s books, there was a lot of unfinished work where she also gets distracted and therefore works at a very slow pace.
Emmy is desperate to get her pen licence before moving up to year 5 but I’m not entirely sure this is going to happen, if it doesn’t we will practice neater handwriting over the summer holidays. She has taken her books into the Deputy Head once this year to see if she had passed but her handwriting wasn’t consistent enough to get it on that occasion – I think she is mainly desperate it get it now so she has it before her friends do.
This week both children had their sports days – Harry’s was on Monday as due to it being hot they did timed slots for each year group, as they did last year, and it worked so much better this way. It means that the children aren’t sitting around on the field for hours at a time just waiting for the other year groups to do their races and also means that us parents don’t have to hang around all morning waiting for them to run 2 races. We are given timed slots so if we wanted could go home and return in time to see our children take part, of course, for me who walks the school run having to be back for 10 am meant it really wasn’t worth walking home for 10 minutes to then head out again so I watched friends children race and had a good old natter.
Harry did a plain running race and then one where he had to lift a hula hoop up over his body at 2 separate parts of the race. Being one of the tallest in his class had disadvantages for that race and while he ran really quickly to the hoops he was slowed down by being very tall – sprinting with a smile on his face and of course looking to see how his friends were doing he came 4th in this race out of 6 and was very proud of himself, hugging his friends who he raced with.

He came 2nd in the running race and was super excited to get a 2nd place sticker. Watching the children sit nicely and cheer on their classmates is really lovely to see, they were all so well behaved and held up banners they had made in class.

Emmy’s sports day was yesterday and took ALL morning. It started at 9.30am and finished at 12 pm, and I was glad it wasn’t as hot as Monday but I did still manage to get burnt while standing watching her.
They each had to compete in 3 races – a sprint, an egg and spoon race (well bat and ball race) and a sack race. They compete in 4’s as they race for their house colours: Red, Blue, Yellow and Green teams. Emmy is in Blue house/team.
She came 1st in her sprint, last in the egg and spoon race and 1st in her sack race.
Emmy doesn’t really like sports and had been dreading sports day, however, she was beaming after a 1st place finish in her first race and that smile stayed on her face all morning.

They then moved around the school field to take part in various activities in which they scored points for their coloured team, there were penalty shoot outs, throwing a ball while sitting down, javelin (using foam darts), jumping activities and a few others.

The smiles stayed on their faces all morning and the kids had a lovely time with Blue team being the overall winners yet again (they’ve won nearly every year as far as I can remember), which meant Emmy was over the moon.
Harry is currently on a school trip to Paradise Park with his year group today and there is inflatables day to look forward to next week where the school field will be filled with bouncy castles for the kids to enjoy all day.
I’m pretty sure that’s the work in class finished for the kids now too – Emmy had assessments this week then they usually spend the next two weeks colouring, playing board games and watching videos in class.
Roll on the start of the summer holidays!
When do your children break up for summer or have they already?
