We tend to associate certain decor approaches with specific years or eras – but, in fairness, it’s not like certain trends just disappear abruptly as soon as it’s a new year or, indeed, a new decade. Here are some trends that we can clearly see staying for longer now that we’ve got – ahem – “2020 vision”.
Grandmillennial style
Millennials might be addicted to Instagram, Snapchat and Love Island, but it turns out they still have at least some taste in the form of the “Grandmillennial” style. You could see it as adding modern touches to time-tested staples of interior design.
Elle Decor shows a photo of how it can work in practice – but, if you’re still struggling, just remember: keep the art modern and the furniture crisply and cleanly lined.

Layering old and new
It’s not only millennials who are likely to enjoy mixing and matching with their decor pieces in 2020. If you’ve recently moved into a new-build home that looks every inch of one, but you have rejected heritage pieces on the assumption that they “wouldn’t look right” in your home, reject no more…
You could be pleasantly surprised by what results from placing old items to a contemporary backdrop or, indeed, vice versa. Perhaps you could buy souvenirs abroad for displaying back home.
Earth tones
The health of the earth has become an increasingly significant preoccupation in recent years, largely spurred by warnings from the likes of Sir David Attenborough and Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. There’s no reason why you can’t bring “earthy” tones to your home, too.
Exactly what tones would those be? Chocolate brown, olive green, wine and yellow ochre would all be good examples – and solid candidates for inclusion on sofas or walls.
Multi-functional spaces
You might be familiar with “performance fabrics”, which can continue to look super-stylish whether they are placed in luxurious spaces or family rooms that tend to take a bit more punishment.
However, the right decor can render your home multi-functional in more than an aesthetic sense. In a home office, for example, you could add a closet easy, once out of use, to conceal behind a door.
Furniture with rounded edges
You might have noticed the ’80s making something of a comeback recently – and, while humanity might prefer to omit the big shoulder pads these days, you could rejoice in splashing out on some tubular-looking furniture. You do, however, have to be careful to get this trend just right for 2020.
To that end, you could particularly consider curved sofas in gorgeous rich velvets, as advocated by Real Homes for making an instantly glamorous statement.
Taking inspiration from bars and restaurants
Which of your favourite eateries you take inspiration from is up to you! These days, staying in can feel like the new going out – hence why, if you want to foster the romantic feeling of a posh restaurant, you could heed that Pagazzi have a range of ceiling lights, including elaborate-looking gold chandeliers, conducive to this effect.
