The teenage years are not the easiest to get through when it comes to your children. But while any parent can find them challenging, these years are important when it comes to creating habits and behaviours that your child will utilise and respond with in the future. Not everyone finds the teenage years difficult, but the one thing to remember is that each child will be going through changes both physically and mentally, and how they react will be individual from one child to the next. So the best advice is not to compare your child to any other, just as you wouldn’t in those early years as they reach their milestones. However, if you do find that your relationship with your teen is a little difficult at times then you may be wondering what you can do to improve your relationship with your teen. With that in mind, here are some of the things that you could try to improve your relationship with your teen.
Tips to help improve your relationship with your teen
Remember what it was like to be a teenager yourself
One of the first things that would be advisable to do would be to try and think back to a time when you were a teenager. We have all been there, and now you can look back on those times from an adult perspective. Remember how you felt, what you went through, what felt like a big deal at times. Doing this can help you to draw from your own experiences, which can be beneficial through difficult times. It can also help when it comes to offering advice.
Empathise with how they are feeling
Empathy is one thing that you can give, after all, it isn’t easy being a teenager. With so many feelings and emotions roaring around their head, and hormones racing around their bodies, it can be hard for them to comprehend how they feel, or even express it in the right way. Empathy can be a great platform to build upon.
Stay calm through challenging moments
Of course, there will be challenging moments. Attitude and backchat, behaviour and actions that you don’t agree with, are all things that can push the boundaries of your relationship. But again, think back to your teenage years. Did you do similar? Stay calm through challenging times as your reaction is more important than ever.
Show interest in what interests them
No matter whether you like it or understand it, try and show an interest in what interests them. They will recognise the effort and appreciate the interest, and it can be a great stepping stone to build upon.

Respect works both ways
You may demand respect from your children but it also works both ways. Show that you respect their thoughts, opinions, and actions. Giving a little means you get it back and it can work wonders for your relationship.
Give them responsibility and show your trust
Responsibility is key in a teenager’s development. Understanding how things work and being in charge of jobs or certain aspects of the household will be a great grounding for them. But you also need to show some trust. Whether that is you trust they can take care of the family pet, walk to the shop for groceries, or trust in where they go and who they hang around with. Giving them that extra trust, responsibility, and freedom can go a long way. It might feel hard to take that step, but it is part of growing up, and you give the extra freedom, even a little bit, can stop the barriers going up and improve your overall relationship.
Communication
There is no doubt about it, communication is one of the most important aspects of any relationship. Talking can help improve your relationship or just having an ear to listen to them can help. The more you openly communicate, even about how you feel from certain actions and responses, the more you will have a common ground to build upon.
Remember to have fun
Finally, try and remember to have fun. It may sound silly, but fun in any relationship makes things better. Laugh, be silly and do things together. Small gestures and actions can make a big difference overall. Your relationship shouldn’t always feel strained, and if things are had right now it is always a good idea to put any ill feelings and angst to one side and offer the love branch of fun and laughter. It will give you something to build upon to eventually resolve any challenges you may both be facing.
Hopefully, these things can help you to improve your relationship with your teen.
