Top 8 Makeup Hacks for Beginners

Posted on December 18, 2019

**Collaborative post**

We currently live in a world with almost impossible beauty standards. As technology makes filters and photo editing software more accessible, we often rely on cosmetics to help improve our physical features. It’s important to remember that there is nothing wrong with gaining more confidence by using makeup and other beauty products.

Here are the top makeup hacks that even beginners can pull off:

1. Start with clean skin

You need to make sure that you thoroughly clean your face before you apply any creams or products. A fresh face ensures a smooth and even application on your foundation and other products. If you’re looking for a safe cleanser that’s good for all skin types, you can try the Benton Honest Cleansing Foam from this website.

2. Plastic spoon for better mascara application

Most beginners don’t know how to apply mascara without accidentally leaving smudges on the skin properly. A simple tip to preventing black ink from spilling unto your skin is using a plastic spoon to assist you in mascara application. Simply lean the spoon against your lower lashes and apply the mascara comfortably.

3. Scotch tape stencils

Have you ever wanted to create angular lines with your eye shadow and eyeliner, but you never could get them right? Simple scotch tape will help you angle those lines correctly. Before you apply anything, place a scotch tape at an angle towards the edge of your eyes. The corner on the left has to form an identical mirrored angle to the other side. Don’t forget to remove your stencils after you’re done!

4. Eye drops to fix clumpy mascara

You might have experienced having clumpy mascara or hard mascara applicators. The mascara buildup happens because of the air that enters and dries up the product. The simple fix is that you put droplets of eye drops into the container then rub the applicator inside. The eye drops should soften any clumps and buildups happening in the container.

5. Homemade lip scrub for glass lips effect

You might want to achieve that Korean glass lip effect, but you have chapped lips. You can try to apply petroleum jelly on your lips, but that doesn’t guarantee that the dried parts of the lip will soften up. To improve your lip texture, you need to do a scrub to exfoliate your lips.

Here are steps on how to create your all-natural homemade lip scrub:

  • Get one tablespoon of coconut oil, two tablespoons brown sugar, and one tablespoon honey
  • Combine the ingredients in a small container that can accommodate your toothbrush head
  • Apply petroleum jelly or lip balm before scrubbing
  • Get a toothbrush, take some scrub and lightly glide along your lips

To seal in the moisture, you can reapply lip balm or petroleum jelly after you’re done with the scrubbing.

6. Tightline your lashes

Tightlining is a technique that you can use to create a naturally full lash effect without giving off the impression that you’re wearing eyeliner. To do this, just draw a line lightly closest to your lash base. Start from the middle part of the lashes instead of the inner corners. Make the darker shade along the outer tip of the lashes.

7. Making eyeshadow colours pop

You might notice that some eye shadows don’t have the pigmentation to stand out from your natural skin colour. If you want the shades of your eyeshadow to pop, add a base of white eyeliner before applying the eyeshadow. Apply the white colour throughout your entire eyelid after your eye primer. You can do this hack with or without the eye primer.

8. Heat your eyelash curler

Do you feel like even with all the curling, your eyelashes are still not curled enough? You can heat your lash curler with a blowdryer for around 5 seconds. Immediately use the curler like you usually do. The heat will allow it to function as a mini hair curler. Just be sure to do this on special occasions because the heat might damage your lashes.

Final Thoughts

Makeup doesn’t have to be intimidating, and you don’t have afraid of doing things unconventionally. If you don’t have the expertise, training, and experience to do makeup without hacks, then you should just stick to these basics until you learn how to do things better. Remember that the result is the most important part of cosmetics. No one has to know you’re using a plastic spoon to prevent mascara smudges!
