If you are getting a dog for the first time, then you need to avoid these top mistakes. If you do, then you will be a better pet owner and you may even find that you can make your life, way easier.
Not Creating a House-Training Plan
The first thing you need to do is create a plan for house training. If you have an older dog then you might not need to worry about house training as much, but if you are getting a new puppy then you will need to teach them where to go to the bathroom. If you neglect this stage, then you may find that your puppy is way more prone to accidents and that it becomes difficult to leave them. If you can have a solid potty-training plan put in place before you bring your new dog home then this will help you to reinforce good behaviour.
Not Socialising Your Dog
Socialising your pup is so important. If you want your dog to be well-behaved then taking them to see new places and exposing them to new sounds is always a good idea. During the first three months of having your puppy, you will need to do a lot of work with them. Activities such as visiting a pet store, playing with dog toys or even arranging a playdate are all good things to do. Of course, before your dog interacts with other dogs, you will want to make sure that they have all of their required vaccinations. You may also want to get some nail clippers for dogs as well, as they won’t be able to grind their nails down if they cannot go out for walks, which is usually the case for the first 12 weeks.
Skipping Obedience
If you are a first-time pet owner, then you may find it very easy to become overwhelmed by the fun of getting a new dog. That being said, every dog out there will benefit from basic obedience training. Some dogs will need more training than others, so make sure that you do a lot of leash training as well as socialisation exercises. If you can do this, then you will be able to create a solid routine for them. You can reward good behaviour while teaching your dog basic commands. Getting private lessons can be a good idea, so look up dog classes.
Feeding too Much
If this is your first dog, then you may not see the harm in giving your dog a few table scraps or some extra treats. That being said, pet obesity is a huge problem. Even just a little bit of extra weight can cause major health problems. Excessive weight can shorten the life expectancy of your dog and it can also make it more challenging to manage joint and mobility issues. This is especially the case as they age, so make sure that you look into things like this before you start treating your dog unnecessarily, even if it doesn’t seem like much at the time.
