For many women, the road to having a baby is straightforward, but for others, it can be more of a challenge. There are certain things you can do to prepare your body for pregnancy, if this is something you want, to increase your chances of conceiving naturally. Unfortunately, as many as 1 in 6 couples struggle to conceive, which may, in part, be due to a lack of education regarding fertility. Generally speaking, fertility isn’t something that is widely discussed, so most of us know less than we probably should about our ability to conceive.
Start with a trip to your GP who will be able to give you a general check-up and answer any questions you may have. Certain STIs or cancer treatments may have hindered your ability to conceive naturally, in which case your GP will be able to talk to you about various fertility treatments. Chlamydia, for example, can lead to damaged or scarred fallopian tubes and since IVF bypasses the need for viable fallopian tubes, it might be your only option.
You may have to make some simple lifestyle choices to make pregnancy more possible. For instance, if you’re a smoker or drink alcohol often, it’s crucial that you quit as soon as possible. Help is available should you require it. What’s more, if you exercise excessively, it would be wise to reduce this to a moderate amount. Extreme exercise or dieting can prevent your period, which is obviously crucial when conceiving.
Think about what you eat. Oily fish, like salmon and mackerel, are great for boosting fertility. They are packed with Omega-3, which plays a vital role in regulating the reproductive cycle. Eggs, garlic, avocado and full-fat dairy are other good options if you want to improve your diet. Eating lots of fatty foods and sugary snacks will increase your blood pressure, which will not help you become pregnant. In fact, being overweight whilst pregnant may cause various other problems that could lead to miscarriage. It’s wise to aim for a BMI of anything between 18.5 and 24.9.
It’s not just women who cause infertility in couples. Men can also become infertile, especially if they have other health issues or make poor lifestyle choices. Steroids, for example, can stop the production of sperm. With that said, if you have a male partner that you’re trying to conceive with, make sure he is also taking the right measures to improve your chances of becoming pregnant. Your partner can consider taking men’s prenatal vitamin, this kind of vitamin will provide him stronger and healthier sperm.
