5 Tips to Staying Safe When Living Out in the Country

Posted on May 17, 2018May 17, 2018

Whether you live in the big city or a sleepy country area, your home security should be your top priority. After all, criminals don’t discriminate. It’s always a good idea to take proactive measures that will keep you safe while living in the country.

Most rural areas are sparsely populated, and the homes or farms are located far away from any neighbours. This typical isolation of country living can be very quiet and peaceful. But it also presents significant challenges when it comes to home security. That’s because securing a home in the city is a much different process than rural home security. So here are the top 5 tips to keep you safe in your country home:

1. Invest in an Alarm System

If you live in the country, you might have many structures on your property. A great way to keep all of them safe is by wiring them all with a good alarm system. When an unauthorized person tries to open any door or window, a visual and audible alarm will be activated. Then, the system will send out an alert to your smartphone and the nearest authorities.

Such alarm systems are a great way to dissuade any potential intruders. You can also take it a step further and invest in a good wireless driveway alarm too. This is especially important if you have a long driveway. After all, most home-related crimes occur when you are either entering or exiting the house. A wireless driveway alarm will keep you from joining this statistic.

2. Set Up Surveillance Cameras

Privacy, peace, and quiet are just some of the perks of living in the country. But such homes are usually situated on large tracts of land. Since most of these properties are so big, it is almost impossible to keep an eye on every part of it.

That’s why it is so important to invest in a good home surveillance system to increase visibility around your home. You can even sync up any surveillance cameras to your smartphone to enable you check up on the house from time to time. The real-time video feeds will help you stay alert. Consider setting up the surveillance cameras at your driveway, all entrances and exits, around the perimeter, and near any outbuildings.

3. Use Motion-Activated Lights

Depending on how much land you have, keeping an eye over your entire property can be a challenge. This is especially true at night. To solve this problem, place motion-activated lights at strategic places around your property.

Such places can include at your front and backyard, around any outbuildings, and even along your driveway. These lights will only turn on when they detect movement. Not only will this alert you, it also acts as a deterrent to any intruders.

4. Use a Good Deadbolt

Most times, the first line of defence is a good lock. It might sound too simple or low-tech, but a properly installed deadbolt will deter anyone but the most determined intruder. Using a snap lock is just inviting buglers to put a screwdriver or hammer into the frame and pop it. So, start with a solid door and a quality deadbolt and ensure that they are installed correctly to ensure that they can’t be battered in easily.

5. Get Some Guard Animals

This is not about getting the most vicious dog to protect your home. You don’t want any animal that is trained to fear and attack humans near your family. That’s a prime recipe for disaster. Instead, look for a dog that can bark while still being kept inside. Most intruders who breaks in and encounter a guard dog will back out, rather than risk significant injury. That said, keep in mind that you may be required to post a warning sign in many jurisdictions.
