Exploring Free Activities in Essex this February Half Term

Exploring Free Activities in Essex this February Half Term

Posted on February 13, 2024March 30, 2025

One thing is given during the February half-term break, and that is you can never guarantee the weather in Essex (or anywhere in the UK) – while we all hope it will be dry enough actually to enjoy this time off with the children, it will be cold as we would expect for this time of the year. Currently, my weather app is showing it should be dry for our half-term week (week beginning 19th February), but I’ll not be holding my breath. However, rain never stops our fun; it is just a matter of dressing for the weather and making the most of it.

Exploring Free Activities in Essex this February Half Term

With kids eager to explore and parents seeking budget-friendly activities, the quest for free entertainment becomes paramount. As an Essex resident and a parent myself, I’ve scoured the region to compile a list of delightful and cost-free adventures for families to enjoy this February break.

1. Nature Walks in Epping Forest

climbing tree epping forest

Embrace the great outdoors with a rejuvenating stroll in the great outdoors. Epping Forest offers a perfect retreat for nature enthusiasts with its sprawling woodlands and scenic trails. Explore ancient trees, spot wildlife, and enjoy the serene ambience while bonding with your family.

Epping Forest is a vast area of ancient woodland and open grassland. It covers approximately 2,400 hectares (6,000 acres) and is one of London’s largest open space areas.

Historically, Epping Forest was a royal hunting ground and has been associated with various monarchs throughout English history, including Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

The forest offers visitors a wide range of recreational activities, including walking, cycling, horse riding, bird watching, and picnicking. There are numerous trails and paths crisscrossing the forest, allowing visitors to explore its diverse landscapes.

There are several visitor centres and facilities where visitors can learn more about its history, wildlife, and conservation efforts. These centres often host educational programs, events, and guided walks. With numerous pay and display car parks easily located, it makes it a wonderfully easy to asses location for a great family day out. We love to take a picnic, climb trees, build camps with fallen sticks and look out for wildlife, it is always exciting to see the deer running through the forest.

One of our favourite places to visit is Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge, which is free of charge and provides lots of things for children and adults to do as well as teaching them about history at the same time.

2. Beachcombing at Mersea Island

Take a trip to the charming Mersea Island and indulge in a day of beachcombing bliss. From collecting seashells to building sandcastles, the shores of Mersea Island offer endless opportunities for family fun. Don’t forget to pack a picnic and soak in the breathtaking views of the coastline.

Mersea Island is a charming gem nestled off the coast of Essex, just 9 miles off the south-east of Colchester.

One of the most enchanting aspects of Mersea Island is its serene and picturesque landscapes. From stunning coastal views to peaceful countryside scenes, the island offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The scenic beauty of Mersea Island is perfect for outdoor activities such as beachcombing, birdwatching, and leisurely walks along the shore.

Mersea Island boasts a rich history and vibrant culture, with quaint villages, historic landmarks, and fascinating museums waiting to be explored. You can visit West Mersea’s picturesque village with its traditional cottages, explore the ancient ruins of the Roman Fort at Cudmore Grove Country Park, or learn about the island’s maritime heritage at the Mersea Island Museum.

3. Picnic in the Park at Hylands House or enjoy the Free open house on 18th February

For a delightful picnic at Hylands House in Chelmsford, gather your blankets and baskets. Surround yourself with the beauty of Hylands Park, bask in the tranquillity of its manicured gardens, and relish a leisurely afternoon with your loved ones.

Hylands House opens its doors free of charge to reveal the secrets behind its history, with an rotating monthly exhibition displayed in the library. Browse the house at your own leisure throughout the day, or join the guided tour at 10am.

Take a walk through the gardens of the Estate and learn even more about the history with the new multimedia tour. You can borrow a handset from The Stables Information Point or use your own smartphone.

February’s free open house will be on the 18th of February, where you can enjoy the following throughout the day:

  • Storytelling by Mike Dodsworth at 10:30am 11:30am, 12:30pm and 2pm in the Drawing Room.
  • You can visit the Library to read more about Weddings and Royal Visits with the social history exhibition.
  • Children’s activities will be taking place in the Banqueting Room and will be themed around this month’s exhibition.
  • Two tours of Hylands House will run throughout the day. The morning one begins at 10am and the afternoon tour starts at 1pm. You can meet your guides at the welcome table just inside the front doors.
  • There will be a food & craft market showcasing a selection of outdoor traders and vendors for the street food and craft market outside of Hylands House.
  • You can also enjoy the Hot Box DJ set outside in the market whilst you’re here.
  • Visit The Stables, where resident artists throw open their studio doors and welcome you to see into their working spaces – explore upstairs as well as downstairs!

4. Artistic Adventures at Firstsite

Unleash your creativity at Firstsite, Colchester’s contemporary art gallery offering free admission. Explore thought-provoking exhibitions, engage in interactive workshops, and ignite your imagination as you delve into the vibrant world of art and culture.

Firstsite is the East of England’s contemporary visual arts organisation where you can experience the most exciting developments in contemporary art, and explore the rich artistic legacy cultivated by the East of England’s unique landscape and character.

Open all year – with free admission and a vibrant programme of exhibitions, films, workshops and events to spark your imagination, alongside a café and shop, Firstsite is for everyone.

5. Birdwatching at Abberton Reservoir

Discover the wonders of wildlife at Abberton Reservoir, a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Set amidst picturesque surroundings, the reservoir offers tranquil walking trails and abundant opportunities to observe a diverse array of bird species in their natural habitat.

Abberton Reservoir is an artificial body of water located near to the coast and situated 5 miles south-west of Colchester near the village of Layer de la Haye. It is the fourth largest reservoir in England with an area of 4.9 square kilometres (1,200 acres).

The huge expanse of Essex & Suffolk Water’s Abberton Reservoir is one of Europe’s top wetland sites. It is of international importance as a safe haven for wild ducks, swans and other water birds.

6. Visit Local Libraries

Exploring Free Activities in Essex this February Half Term

Stimulate young minds with enriching storytelling sessions at your local library. From magical tales to adventurous escapades, libraries across Essex offer engaging storytime sessions that captivate children’s imaginations and foster a love for reading.

Local libraries offer the opportunity for children to explore a huge range of books which they can take home to enjoy free of charge. It is free to sign up to your local library and you can visit as often as you like.

You can also borrow Audiobooks and DVD’s as well as books.

During the summer holidays, they also run a reading challenge over those 6 weeks. You sign your child up for this challenge, and they then have to read 6 books during the course of the summer holidays; for each book read, they will receive a sticker and a mark in their record book – once complete, they will receive a certificate and a medal. This is a great way to encourage them to read.

7. Outdoor Play at Weald Country Park

Let the kids run wild and free at Weald Country Park in Brentwood. With vast open spaces, playgrounds, and scenic trails, Weald Country Park provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures, from family picnics to energetic games of tag.

At Weald Country Park, you can enjoy over 520 acres of woodland, lakes, hay and wildflower meadows, a deer park, a Stick Man sculpture trail, kid’s play areas, open grassland and spectacular views.

The park is well-loved for its wildlife and deer park. Wildlife includes fallow deer, cattle, herons, mallard ducks and other water birds.

Weald Country Park originated as a medieval deer park during the 12th century, and you can get up close to the resident herds in the deer enclosure.

The new Stick Man Trail opened up in 2023 where families can discover all 6 characters and animals throughout the trail based on the much-loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The trail starts from Weald visitor centre car park and heads down towards the lake, from there you take a right at the lake and keep going round. Trail maps can be purchased from the visitor centre car park for 80p.

8. Exploring Riverside Promenades in Chelmsford

Take a leisurely stroll along the scenic riverside promenades in Chelmsford and soak in the picturesque views of the River Chelmer. Chelmsford’s riverside offers a serene setting for quality family time, from tranquil waterside walks to feeding the ducks.

From the Chelmer and Blackwater Canal to Hylands Park, there are so many places to enjoy a wonderful family walk in Chelmsford.

9. Great Notley Country Park

Great Notley Country Park is home to Essex’s longest play trail and Sky Ropes and offers the perfect family day out.

Whether you’re an adventurer at heart or just want to relax and unwind in the beautiful countryside, Great Notley Country Park offers the perfect day out for all the family in Essex.

Covering 100 acres of open space, the park is home to Sky Ropes, the fun, family-friendly high ropes adventure course, as well as Essex’s longest kid’s play trail.

Jump, swing, slide, crawl and climb your way around 1.2km of fun including giant seesaws, swing scales, rope climbers, slides, forts and a large sand play area.

Looking for something a bit quieter? The park also offers some lovely areas to explore and enjoy nature including a fishing lake and wildflower meadows. It’s popular for a wide range of activities including birdwatching, walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, football, picnics and kite-flying.

Please note: while the trails and play areas here are free of charge, you do need to pay for the car park which is £3.80 for up to 2 hours, but from experience that really isn’t enough time to work your way around the play trail so you’ll want to invest in a ticket for up to 4 hours (£5.10) or all day for £6.30. You also have to pay for the high ropes.

10. Wildlife Discovery Centre – Fishers Green

discovery centre fishers green hide

This is perhaps one of the locations we visit most often as a family. Just down the road from us and just a few minutes drive, it can also be accessible on foot via fields and footpaths.

There is a pay and-display car park with toilet facilities in that area, a lovely picnic area and wonderful scenic countryside walks in all directions, depending on how far you want to venture.

In the discovery room you can learn about the habitats and species around you as well as birds that visit the park. Listen to the sounds of wildlife you can find in the park and learn about some of the valley’s history. Peek in the wildlife drawers to see what has been found around the park. Wildlife cameras will bring live footage of what the local critters are up to and you can view them close up going about their daily lives. Relax and have a drink whilst being able to look out of the windows over the reedbed. Kids can play the migration game or draw some of the wildlife that can be seen and take their drawings home.

My children love heading to the hide where you can take a seat and see what you can spot amongst the reeds or head upstairs to the observation tower where you can get an amazing view over Seventy Acres Lake and the living roof, which will be bursting with flora and fauna in the summer when the plants flower and attract a host of wildlife.

Once you have finished, you can walk around Fisher’s Green, enjoying the beautiful scenery as you do.

In conclusion, the February half-term in Essex presents many opportunities for families to bond, explore, and create cherished memories without breaking the bank. From nature walks to cultural excursions, the county’s diverse array of free activities ensures that every moment is filled with joy and adventure. So, embrace the spirit of the February half-term and embark on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Essex’s enchanting landscapes and vibrant communities.
