Giving your child STEM toys is the perfect way to introduce them to science, technology, engineering and maths from an early age. Not only are they a great form of hands-on learning that everyone in the house can get involved with, but they come with plenty of other benefits, from encouraging the development of creativity and cognitive skills to improving your child’s motor skills and coordination.
From Lego blocks to a crystal-growing kit or a plasma orb, there are so many options out there that can appeal to a wide range of kids – and the best part? They make learning oh-so-fun. Here are 5 ways STEM toys can help your kids’ development.
STEM toys can help your kids development
They introduce kids to science
Research shows that more than half of adults believe young people don’t pursue a career in STEM fields simply because they think they are too difficult. Whether it’s programming a robot or looking at everyday objects under a microscope, STEM toys are great for opening young minds and squashing the idea that science, technology, engineering and maths are too hard. STEM toys give kids the confidence to explore on their own, allowing them to forge lifelong interests, and determine whether it’s something they want to pursue as they get older.
Introducing your child to STEM toys from an early age also sets them up for later education, and can even increase their likelihood of attending University, giving them crucial skills for dealing with the stress of studying and absorbing new information. They also help bridge the gap, encouraging kids who might otherwise not pursue STEM – like girls and other disadvantaged kids – by giving them the opportunity to do so.
They encourage creativity and develop cognitive skills
One of the greatest benefits of STEM toys is the fact they encourage creative and cognitive development in kids. STEM toys teach kids to think outside the box and engage in creative thinking and decision-making – skills they will literally use for the rest of their lives.
They similarly encourage cognitive development, including critical-thinking skills like problem-solving and logical reasoning. Presenting a little one with a problem they need to solve allows them to try out different solutions to work determine which one is the best. STEM toys can also help them develop spatial reasoning, and even something as simple as playing with building blocks can help them explore concepts like structure, balance and weight distribution.
They teach motor skills and coordination
Another important way STEM toys can help your kids’ development is by allowing them to hone their fine motor skills. By tinkering around with blocks, puzzles or other pieces of technology, they can improve their hand-eye coordination and dexterity, becoming more adept at using their hands and fingers. Toys like building blocks and Lego are perfect for these skills. Ideal for kids in the middle of a big developmental growth spurt, playing with these toys will grow their confidence in both their thinking abilities and physical abilities.
They encourage child-parent bonding (and can even involve the whole family!)
Another great benefit of STEM toys is they’re an excellent activity for child-parent bonding. They often require a little bit of parental guidance – especially when it comes to conducting experiments, or building something more complex. Of course, be mindful not to take over, and let your child lead the way as much as they can. Studies show that one of the best predictors of academic achievement is having parents who involve themselves in their child’s learning. These activities can even get the whole family involved, which is great for teaching your child about collaboration and working as part of a team. The best part is they’re often just as fun for adults as they are for kids (bonus!).
They make learning fun
Last but not least, STEM toys make learning fun – so much so kids will often forget they’re even learning. Whether it’s the challenge of engineering something with a building kit, or the excitement of watching a science experiment explode, STEM toys are incredibly engaging for kids – much more so than simply sitting in front of a screen. STEM toys allow kids to associate science with fun, giving them a sense of pride when their creations come to fruition. It ultimately gives learning, in general, more positive connotations in their minds.
From the cognitive and physical benefits to learning about collaboration and exposing kids to science at a young age, there is so much to be said about STEM toys. Through these experiences, you can give your child a broader view of the world from an early age, encouraging a sense of curiosity when it comes to learning about how things work and setting them up with skills they’ll use for life.
