Whether you are an occasional traveller or have a lifelong wanderlust, we all have a bucket list of places we’d love to visit. However, more often than not, we tend to focus on tourist hotspots, such as capital cities or white sand beaches, forgetting that there are plenty of more remote destinations with a lot to offer. For example, Cornwall, a historic county in the southwest of England, is the perfect holiday destination for adventurers of all ages.
According to a recent study, around 4 million people visit Cornwall each year, which means it doesn’t quite count as a ‘hidden gem’ but is less busy than other destinations, such as London, which welcomes 30 million holidaymakers annually.
With that in mind, here are just some of the reasons why you should add Cornwall to your travel bucket list!
Beautiful views, no matter where you are staying.
Whether you’re travelling down from somewhere else in the UK for a staycation in Cornwall or coming from a little further afield, you’re sure to have your breath taken away by the natural beauty of the area. No matter where you may be staying, be that a remote village or a campsite along the coast, you’ll be surrounded by natural beauty from all angles.
This means that Cornwall is the perfect destination for those looking to spend more time outdoors, especially as there are hundreds of hikes and countryside walks to choose from. As hiking is free, this is a great way to save money while travelling. Even better, the beauty doesn’t end when the sun goes down. In fact, Cornwall is considered to be one of the best destinations in the UK for stargazing, and it’s hard to imagine a better view to fall asleep to than a sky full of stars.
Endless opportunities for adventure and thrill-seeking.
If you’re on the adventurous side and prefer to be active during your vacations, then Cornwall is easily one of the best holiday destinations in the UK. This is due to the fact that adventure is always on the menu at this destination. For example, you could try your hand at Kayaking in some of the most beautiful areas in Cornwall, such as Newquay. Alternatively, you could test your nerve at an outdoor climbing facility or even learn to surf.
To put it simply, there is no end to the fun you can have in Cornwall. However, you should make sure that safety is always a priority, especially if you are in a remote area, as you do not want to get lost or injured. If you’re travelling with children, you should also look for child-friendly activities that they can participate in to fulfil their own sense of adventure and wonder.
The mouth-watering food.
Food tourism is growing in popularity every day, meaning it’s often an essential factor to consider when planning your trip. Thankfully, Cornwall has a range of delicious and authentic English dishes on offer for you to enjoy during your time there. The most iconic being the Cornish Pasty, a pastry dish containing beef and a range of vegetables. According to a recent report, 120 million are sold each year – which must say something about how tasty they are! Other popular dishes include a roast dinner or fish and chips.
Cornwall is also known up and down the UK for its seafood due to the fact that it is a coastal area with plenty of fishing ports. As a result, you should be sure to sample some delicious seafood during your trip.
The rich history.
One of the major benefits of travelling is that it gives you a chance to learn more about the world around you, especially if you make time to visit famous historical and cultural landmarks. History buffs will be pleased to note that there are many historical sites to visit in Cornwall, from castle ruins to museums. While there are plenty to choose from, some of the most famous landmarks include:
- Pendennis Castle.
- Lanhydrock House and Garden.
- The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
- Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park.
- Antony House.
The gorgeous beaches.
Many visitors choose to pop by the bigger cities and tourist attractions when travelling in the UK but pay little attention to the beaches. This is not all that surprising, given that the sun isn’t always shining. However, the Cornish Coast enjoys some of the best weather in the UK year-round, especially during the summer months, meaning that it’s also worthwhile visiting one of the many beaches in Cornwall. Not only will you be able to top up your tan, but you’ll also be able to visit a range of stunning beaches that are off the beaten track, allowing for some true peace and quiet while you explore.
The beaches, coupled with areas of national beauty, also make Cornwall an attractive destination for every member of the family. For example, if you’re planning a UK-based staycation, you can bring your dog along – as there’s yet to be a dog who doesn’t love exploring the countryside!
The price tag.
If you were to visit a busy city during your trip to the UK, such as London, then you’d likely spend a lot more money overall than if you went to a more remote countryside area. This is because prices tend to be lower in these areas when it comes to amenities such as bars, restaurants, and tourist attractions. What’s more, many coastal areas in the UK are offering discounts for travel currently as they continue to move forward from the COVID-19 pandemic in an attempt to increase tourism.
The friendly locals.
When travelling, we’d always recommend getting to know the locals if you want to truly experience what a particular town, village, or area is like. After all, they’ll often have the best recommendations on things to do and see places to eat and drink, and more. As a result, it’s important to note that those local to Cornwall are known for being incredibly friendly and welcoming – likely why tourism in the region has thrived for so long.
The varied entertainment options.
While you may be tempted to hit the hay and head back to your hotel or campsite after a busy day of adventure, Cornwall is also a thriving place in the evening when it comes to entertainment. For example, you could visit a local pub for a delicious meal and drinks or find a live music venue in the area. There are also a range of cinemas, theatres, and similar venues to visit if you’re looking to soak up a little culture during your travels or catch the latest movie release.
Peace and quiet.
Perhaps the biggest reason why you might want to consider a trip to Cornwall is due to the peace and quiet you will no doubt enjoy during your trip. It’s almost impossible to remain stressed when surrounded by natural beauty, birdsong, and the sunset. Furthermore, Cornwall is home to a range of Spa retreats, whether you want to unwind in the hot tub or treat yourself to a massage or beauty treatment. This kind of experience will make clear the importance of wellness in your daily life, meaning that you’ll develop healthy habits that you can take home with you when the time comes!
In short, there are many reasons why you should add Cornwall to your bucket list – whether you’re looking to relax and unwind or chase some thrills in the great outdoors.
