Anxious Parenting: How To Deal With Anxiety As A Stressed-Out Single Mum

Posted on January 24, 2023April 14, 2025

**Collaborative post**

As more single mothers raise their children alone, single parenting is becoming more and more prevalent. Single mums frequently experience particular strains, which can exacerbate feelings of weariness.

First and foremost, it’s critical to prioritise self-care. This could entail setting aside time for yourself, taking breaks throughout the day, or planning regular outings or activities just for you.

Single mums can take a few steps to manage stress and prevent burnout. When you’re a single mum, having coping mechanisms might help you get through these situations with less stress and anxiety. Here are seven strategies for easing the burden of single parenting.

Setting up a Routine

For kids, stability and balance are crucial. When they are aware of what to expect from their daily routine and, in turn, what is expected of them, they function reasonably effectively. Consistently follow a routine for food, sleep, homework, and recreation.

Attempt to maintain this plan consistently even if you are a single mum. Whether you co-parent or not, writing down your kids’ schedule and other schedule-related activities on a calendar is a way to see their daily schedule. Creating a calendar will help you remember it and prepare for events when they arise.

Learn to communicate

When single mums are too busy at work, children get psychologically confused. They stop believing in and respecting their parents. Children’s resistance to listening to their parents causes parents concern. Therefore, spend at least 30 minutes daily sitting and chatting with their kids informally. This will make you happier and assist in reducing stress.

Set aside time daily to appreciate your children, despite the temptation of the mountains of laundry and the sink full of dishes. Play, read, go for a walk, or just listen to music during your alone time. And most importantly, keep your attention on your affection for one another and your family.

Being Mindful And Meditation

Being mindful gives single mums the power to choose how they respond. Anxiety and stress frequently vanish when you feel and accept your fears, irritations, sad memories, and other complex thoughts and feelings. Simply put, practicing mindfulness entails being aware of your needs and wants.

Meditation involves focusing your concentration and calming your senses for an extended period. Meditation benefits those who struggle with anxiety by reducing tension, letting go of negative thought patterns, and increasing awareness of bodily sensations by forcing them to stay in the moment.

However, when you are distracted by unwanted ideas, meditation can be challenging. Many single mums report finding meditation challenging and using cannabidiol products as a coping method for anxiety, especially those who suffer from anxiety and stress.

Seeking professional help

You may be more susceptible to developing anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems if your stress levels are higher. If you need assistance, think about speaking with a mental health professional. Single parents have access to various resources, such as therapy groups, counselling, and, in some instances, medicine.

Be Strong Mentally And Staying Positive

With all the obligations and responsibilities that come with being a single mum, it’s easy to feel overburdened. You can also be dealing with the agony of a divorce or losing a partner. Despite your emotions, keeping a cheerful outlook is crucial since your children can sense your moods.

Exercising frequently, eating healthily, getting adequate rest, and seeking balance are excellent ways to manage stress.

If you’re depressed, expressing some of your feelings to your kids is acceptable, but make sure they understand that you don’t blame them for the issues and that there will be happier moments for the whole family.

Avoid being exploited

Single parents must establish boundaries around what they will and won’t accept. Avoid letting other people misuse your time or energy. Let others know that you don’t accept or welcome such scrutiny because single parents are sometimes subjected to increased judgement about their parenting choices.

You may prevent becoming overburdened by managing your time and energy by establishing boundaries for yourself. Additionally, it will aid in your quest for greater life balance.

Reaching Out For Community Support

Single parents can create a social support network by contacting friends, family, or online groups. Having people to talk to who comprehend the particular difficulties of being a single parent can be helpful.

You can also search for single mum-related groups and pages on social media platforms. Connecting with others who have gone through similar circumstances to your own can be beneficial.

Final words

Situations and actual experiences vary significantly from person to person. Some single mums may need quick access to the tools that help them parent and operate their homes. However, know that you are not alone if you believe that some of the difficulties that can come with single parenting may be related to — or made worse by. It is possible to learn to deal with it, and doing so can help you enjoy a healthy, satisfying life.

Additionally, keeping your home organised and tidy has its own way of reducing your stress levels. Your mind is at ease when you know where your things are.
