Halloween movies for all on Amazon Prime Video

As always, the children are excited for Halloween and have already begun planning their costumes – Emmy wants to dress up with her friends as MIB agents and wants Harry to dress up as an alien – although he’s not as keen on that idea so we will have to have a think about his costume.

While I’m not a huge fan of taking the children out trick or treating, I do love decorating the house, dressing up, face painting and handing out sweets and treats to those who come to our door. The kids love to dress up, to play party-style games and we even make our food Halloween-themed to add to the excitement: Spider pizzas, jelly worms, Halloween Bark and even decorating biscuits to look like spiders and pumpkins.

Another thing I do love is the darker nights and snuggling up watching movies with the kids. Emmy is already counting down to October so she can start watching all the Halloween movies, I’ve pointed out she can watch them earlier but she likes to wait for October before putting them on.

For young children

Room on the Broom – this used to be Harry’s all-time favourite when he was younger and he would watch it on repeat daily before going to bed.

Run time of 27 minutes. Animated movie

To the annoyance of her cat, a kindly witch allows a dog, a bird and a frog to ride on her broomstick. Soon, the group have to work together to save the Witch from a fire-breathing dragon who sets her broom on fire and threatens to eat her.

The Little Vampire – Rated U, run time 1 hour 31 minutes

Tony has moved with his family from a US city to a village in Scotland and finds it hard being the new kid. So he becomes obsessed with vampires. One night a bat flies in his window and transforms into Rudolph, a vampire boy. They become friends and Tony helps him lift the curse of being a vampire.

The Addams Family – Rated PG with a run time of 1 hour 39.

When long-lost Uncle Fester reappears after twenty-five years in the Bermuda Triangle, Gomez and Morticia plan a celebration to wake the dead.

There are a few versions of this movie, from the film version and also an animated version. Also, there is The Addams Family 2 and Addams Family Values.

For older children

Ghostbusters – run time 1 hour 45, rated 12

A classic which everyone loves, in fact it’s so loved the original was released in 1984 and it is still being adapted, renewed and modernised up until just recently, with women Ghostbusters in the 2016 movie Ghostbusters: Answer the Call and a newer movie released in 2021, Ghostbusters: Afterlife which brings Grandchildren of the original team into the picture.

These always remind me of my childhood, favourites in our household when I was growing up and still classics which the kids love, although they seem to prefer the newer movies to the originals.

After the members of a team of scientists lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City, they decide to become “ghostbusters” to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction.

Beetlejuice – run time 1 hour 32 minutes, rated 15

The gags are witty with cartoon-like comedy. A couple move to the country, are killed in an accident and return to their home as ghosts. Trying to remove the obnoxious new owners, they call on the services of a demented but hilarious bioexorcist, Beetlejuice.

The Witches – Rated PG

OK, it’s not entirely a Halloween movie as such (but nor are the above either really) but it has to be included due to the Witch theme. As with most of the classic movies of my childhood, there is the original 1990’s version and a modern remake (2020) – the originals are always my favourites in these cases but the children really love the newer version, especially as we stayed in the Hotel in Cornwall the movies were filmed in – they can picture the rooms and scenery far better having stayed in that location.

The Witches of Eastwick – Run time of 1 hour 57, Rating 18 (although I’m not sure it warrants that rating and a 15 would be better in my personal opinion)

Another classic from my childhood, released in 1987

The “witches” are three modern-day women yearning for Mr. Right in a quaint New England town full of Mr. Uptights.

For adults and older teens – those who won’t have nightmares

Disclaimer – do not ask me anything about these movies below, I DO NOT do scary movies and, therefore have not seen them, and I will not be adding images from the movie either as I don’t want to be responsible for any nightmares, including my own!

Rob Zombie’s Halloween – Run time 1 hour 50 minutes, Rating 18+

Michael Meyers is released from the mental institution where he was committed for 17 years, and goes on a rampage to find his younger sister. No one is safe. Remake of the 1978 film directed by John Carpenter.

Honeyspider – run time 1 hour 15, rating 18+

It’s Halloween 1989, as murder plays out on the silver screen during a shift at the movie theater, everyone turns up dead. Jackie blue is helplessly trapped, as the night comes to a shocking end.
