Despite what you may think, creativity is a skill that we’re all capable of. While it may be in different ways, we all have the ability to think innovatively and come up with our own ideas. It’s key for problem-solving and critical thinking which is why it’s a vital skill to work on with children from an early age. We’ve shared some expert teacher tips below on how you can boost your child’s creativity.
Arts and Crafts
Glitter and glue can surprisingly be very helpful in helping children develop their core thinking skills. Art encourages children to explore their imagination and create their own ideas, exercising the right side of the brain.
Lego
Like arts and crafts, Lego provides open-ended play opportunities where children can explore different possibilities and strengthen their imagination. They have complete freedom of choice as they aren’t confined by a set way of doing things.
Confidence
When developing their own ideas, children can feel a little shy and apprehensive to share. You can help them to be confident in their ability by using praise and encouragement. The great thing about art is that there is no right or wrong answer.
Brainstorming Exercises
There’s also creativity in terms of coming up with solutions to problems. You can explore creativity in this sense by playing brainstorming games. Set your child different riddles and problems and see how many possible solutions they can come up with. If they begin to run out, you can help by offering them new perspectives which will help them to think “outside of the box”.
Puzzles
Puzzles are another fun way to help your child in this area. Similar to above, they will need to think outside of the box and consider new angles and perspectives.
Ask Questions
Whilst they play, try to come up with “what if questions” and encourage your child to consider what may happen if they were to do x,y,z. It will get them to formulate their own ideas and think about the consequences of their decisions which is an essential part of creating good ideas.
These are just some of the ways that you can help your child to build on their creativity. Aside from creative play, an optimistic outlook is important. It allows us to see the brighter side of things and can help your child to do their best thinking.
