Make Mother’s Day Special with These Fun Activities

Posted on March 7, 2022August 30, 2024

**Collaborative post**

There are lots of ways to celebrate mom this Mother’s Day beyond a card and a bouquet of flowers. What she really wants is time spent with you and something creative and fun. For most of the country, spring has sprung in May, allowing for outdoor activities that range from relaxing to fitness-oriented. Depending on your mom, choose one (or more!) things to do so the day will be memorable for you both!

Get Competitive with a Lawn-Game Tournament

Take advantage of the warmer weather and sunshine and host a lawn game tournament. Horseshoes, cornhole, bocce ball, ladder ball, croquet, volleyball – even an outdoor scavenger hunt are all great options. Create first, second and third place award certificates or trophies (everybody loves freshly cut wildflowers!) and energize family and friends with sandwiches or a barbeque.

Take Mom to the Theater

Mother’s Day makes for the perfect opportunity to get dressed up with mom and take her out to see a great show. With mask mandates lifting it’s easier than ever to buy tickets for an afternoon off-Broadway show that you can enjoy together. Don’t forget the lunch or dinner afterwards!

Garden Together

Go to the garden store with mom and pick out her favourite annuals and perennials. Spend the day cleaning up the garden from last year and preparing the soil for the plantings. Or, surprise her with a basket of goodies that include seed packets, floral gardening gloves, gardening tools, and a Visa Gift Card for her to spend on whatever garden-related items she desires! The gift card can be customized to include a picture of her favourite flowers on the front and text that expresses your most heartfelt sentiment.

Serve Her Breakfast in Bed

An all-time favourite among mothers everywhere, getting served breakfast in bed feels like royalty and is the height of pampering. To make it truly special, write out a menu on elegant card stock (use your nicest writing! Go ahead and make the attempt at calligraphy) and have mom check off boxes for what she desires. Include food like:

  • Chocolate chip pancakes
  • The choice of two syrups (such as maple and blueberry)
  • Fresh squeezed orange juice
  • Bacon or sausage
  • Coffee and/or mimosa
  • Fresh fruit

Don’t forget a bud vase with a fresh flower and to use the good China and cloth napkin!

Get a Tarot Card Reading Together

Does your mom like to talk about the spiritual realm? Even if you take a more entertaining viewpoint on your reading, it’s sure to be great fun and you’ll have lots to talk about afterwards. Other options for exploring spiritual awakening together include going to a tea-leaf reader, an astrologer, a psychic reading, palm reader, aura reading, and more.

Go for a Paddle

The water might not be warm enough for swimming but the air is warm enough for boating! Rent out a kayak or canoe for the afternoon and paddle over a pond, lake or through tributaries. Take the time to look for wildlife along the shoreline and peeking out from the water like herons, swans, and frogs. Paddling together takes cooperation and patience that can prove to be a great bonding experience.

Contact Your Inner Diva

The chances of either of you becoming the next Beyoncé are pretty slim but that doesn’t mean you can’t belt it out anyway. Whether you’re singing into hairbrushes while the radio plays or you indulge in a full-fledged karaoke system, you’ll be breathless with excitement and confidence as each songs rolls into the next.

Book a Photo Shoot

With technology being what it is today and photos instantly available for viewing, families are getting fewer professional pictures done. This Mother’s Day, hire a professional photographer and think of a theme that suits you and your loved ones ie; outdoorsy, the water, elegant, jeans and t-shirt, whatever feels comfortable for everyone. The more generations in the photo the better, and then be sure to get one of just the mothers.

Take Mom Wine Tasting

Choose a designated driver or rent a town car to take the two of you (or other 21+ aged family members) to a nearby winery or through a wine trail. If wine doesn’t tickle mom’s fancy try craft breweries instead. Either way, grab her favourites from the day.

When it comes to things to do for mom on Mother’s Day, the options are nearly endless. Take into account the events and activities available in your area and what mom likes to do. Whether you go rock climbing, parasailing or simply sit on the back porch and snack on crustless sandwiches, your mom will love spending the time with you.
